Term 2 - Thursday 26th January 2017
Welcome to the Year 5 Newsletter
Dear Parents,
Another half term has whizzed by and Kennedy School is celebrating Chinese New Year with many wonderful assemblies, performances and decorations. We wish you all a prosperous Year of the Rooster and a relaxing holiday with family and friends. Kung hei fat choi 恭喜發財!
The Year 5 Team
Unit of Inquiry
The children have been introduced to the summative assessment task of the 'Where we are in Place and Time' unit of inquiry.
Central idea: Evidence of past civilisations can be used to make connections to present day societies.
Lines of inquiry:
Characteristics of civilisations and societies (Form)
Connections between past and present (Connection/Reflection)
Processes involved in collecting, analysing and validating evidence (Function)
Using the 'GRAPES' acronym, the children will now transfer and apply their knowledge of ancient civilisations to create their own civilisation, 'Mylandia'. They will be expected to show their understanding of each aspect of their civilisation by making connections to the past and the present, including one artistic representation e.g. a painting, clay model, map.
G - Geography
R - Religion
A - Achievements
P - Politics
E - Economy
S - Social structure
Narrative writing
A major component of this unit are the rich narrative writing opportunities for the children. They have been developing their story writing skills by describing characters, settings, complications and using figurative language and exciting vocabulary. The children have been exposed to a variety of openings and endings which go beyond 'Once upon a time' and 'happily ever after'!
Minecraft
Mr Tibble continues to work with each class to safely take them through a selection of Minecraft civilisations. The children are recording their ideas about past civilisations and their modern day counterparts.
Maths
The children have now completed their unit on Measure. After the holidays, we will move onto Shape and Space.
Over the holidays, please do find opportunities to play times table games with your child! Mathletics is always available for them too.
Sports Day
As part of our efforts to develop and improve Sports Day, the children have been given ownership of creating their teams. Each teacher has been assigned a team from each House. Each team will require a parent to help keep score. Please click here and enter your name in the 'Parent Scorer' box - you are most welcome to join the team that your child is in!
As this is a 'working document', we would appreciate it if you did not change any other information or overwrite if another parent has already signed up. We are happy for parents to share the scoring jobs if you are unable to stay for the whole morning - we can arrange this on the day.
Thanks so much for your help!
Horrible Histories Theatre Trip
The children and adults thoroughly enjoyed the fantastic 'Awful Egyptians' production at the APA last week. The show was hilarious, gruesome and very informative!
