Butler Elementary Grade 4

We have been busy learning about creativity. Our discussion included 4 aspects of creativity: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. We have learned how to generate ideas quickly, change them when needed, create unique solutions to problems, and expand on ideas. Students created table top games for others to play and a Marble Roller Coaster Ride. Testing ideas and group problem solving have been very apparent in our classroom. We are now in the process of elaborating on ideas to make them more interesting, more efficient, or just plain better! We will be learning about Rube Goldberg and his creations of making a simple task very complicated through a series of steps. Small groups of students will work together to create their own Rube Goldberg invention. Coming up... learning about inventions as well as the process necessary to create one's own invention!

Groveland Elementary Grades 5 and 6

Archaeology is in full swing at Groveland Elementary. Students took on the role of archaeologists as they wrote journal articles from the year 4013. Artifacts from the school received new meaning. Books went home last week so hopefully families enjoyed reading the creative articles. We have also learned a lot about each other from our mystery bags that we shared last month. After learning about many archaeological terms and tools, we became archaeologists at our field trip to Honey Hollow. Thank you to the chaperones who came along; we couldn't have done it without you! Special thanks to Mr. Jerry Lomas and Mr. Francis Collins who supervised the dig. Also thanks to Mr. Malcolm Crooks, owner of the land, who shared stories of his childhood. Back in the classroom, specific concepts such as civilization, cultural universals, stratigraphy, and dating methods have been discussed. We researched different dating methods with a partner and taught them to the class. Coming up... we will be researching ancient mysteries during the month of December. Small groups will be researching a mystery and creating a presentation to share with the class!
