Subjects

In math, we will starting to use the area model with multiplication and subtraction. We will also be discussing prime and composite numbers.

Your child has their STAR reading levels and AR points for this grading period. There is a link on Central's website (under the Student tab) for them to access AR at home.

In Reading, we will continue the 1st 30 Days in our new reading series (Benchmark Literacy). These first 30 days will have us develop anchor charts to create class expectations during the 90 minute literacy block, start our Fountas and Pinnell level testing, and reviewing genre types.

In Social Studies, we will continue Chapter 1-US Geography. We will be reviewing latitude and longitude along with completing a summary of the chapter. On Friday (9/5), your child will have their first map quiz over the 5 US regions along with describing their climates. We went over the study guide today in class.

In Writing, we will continue the 1st 30 days of Benchmark Writing lessons-working on procedures within the writing block. This week we will focus on creating writing folders, topic lists, and looking at the components of the Writer's Workshop block.

Please refer to the 5th grade website: http://centralfifthgrade.weebly.com/ to locate the Remind invitation to receive text messages regarding classroom information.

Remember-we are only able to bring in healthy snacks and treats to the classroom. I sent home the brochure this week. We will have all birthday celebrations on the LAST Friday each month.

PTA is looking for volunteers for Popcorn Parking. Parents who volunteer their time at this event will have first choice to be chaperones for Camp Tecumseh this Spring. Please check the school's website and the PTA section for sign up details. You can also contact Mrs. Berg-O'Reilly for further details: danielleeberg@hotmail.com.
