The Hawk's Nest
Congratulations to our Girls' Basketball Team! They are the Division B Champions!
Beginning Tuesday, March 29th, our students will join other students throughout Colorado in taking a set of state tests called the CMAS (Colorado Measures of Academic Success). CMAS will be given to students in grades 3-8 in Math and English Language Arts. Students in grades 5 and 8 will be completing the CMAS Science test.
The VCS testing window closes on Friday, April 29th. The tests are aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards. These standards set our community’s expectations for what students must know to be ready for college level courses or a career after they graduate from high school. Families should know if their children are on the right path, and these assessments will provide an “academic checkup” to help us know if our students are ready for what comes next. These assessments also provide information to the district and state on how schools are performing.
We ask that you make a special effort to have your child (ren) to school on time every day as the assessments will begin soon after arrival. Listed below are important things students can do to help ensure they are ready each day to do their best.
- Get a good night’s sleep.
- Eat a healthy breakfast.
- Come to school on time, every day.
- Per state requirements, cell phones are not allowed in the testing environment. Secondary students must have their phones turned off and stored in their lockers. Elementary students must give their phones to their teachers to be placed in a secure location.
- Do your very best.
Thank you for your assistance in our completion of CMAS testing.
Additionally, as required by state law, we are informing you that you have two options in the Aurora Public School District to opt your children out of state testing, if you wish to do so. Here are those options, with corresponding deadlines:
- IC Parent Portal Opt-Out Tool - This tool is now live in your Infinite Campus Parent Portal and instructions to access it are at this link. If you have trouble with Parent Portal, please contact your school representative. The deadline to use this tool is Friday, March 11th.
- Paper Opt-Out Form - The district Opt-Out form is available below Please complete this form and submit it to your school representative. The deadline to use this paper Opt-out form is Friday, April 1st.
Intent to Return
We would like to ensure our current families have secured their places in our school for the upcoming school year. Your assistance is needed to help us determine the demand of our current families.
Although siblings do have priority in the lottery, an Enrollment Application must be submitted for each student in order for them to be included in the lottery. This can be accomplished by completing the application on our enrollment link at http://www.vanguardclassical.org/Enroll.
Please complete the information below.
8th Grade students should return their high school intent form.
If you have any questions regarding enrollment, please contact Vanguard Classical School West at 303-691*2384 or Email Itzhelt Cordero at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Backpacks and Folders
On Fridays, please review your child's Friday folder contents with them.
PBIS Color Systems
Please review your child's planner color with them daily and reach out to our team for clarification or with questions.
The following is a review of our school wide color system:
Green: All students start here every day. If your child has a green in their planner, this indicates that they had a good day and didn't need additional reminders regarding their behavior.
Yellow: This indicates that your child had a few verbal reminders, but did not improve the behavior so the visual reminder was given. Please remember that a yellow is just a reminder and not a "big deal."
Orange: This indicates that your child has had several reminders about their behavior today. When they move to orange they stop and reflect on their behavior and complete a reflection. That reflection is then sent home and needs to be signed by a parent or guardian.
Red: This indicates that even after reflecting upon behavior, your child still struggled today. At this point, you will receive a call home from the team to discuss solutions to support your child throughout the day.
Silver: This indicates that your child went above and beyond expectations today! Students in K-4 who are on silver receive a brag bracelet. 5-8 students receive a call home.

CORE VIRTUE OF THE MONTH: Mercy
This month our focus turns outward again, focusing on one of the virtues that build community. We focus in March on the virtue of MERCY. Mercy is showing kindness to those who have not been kind to us.
Aristotle exalts the just and magnanimous man. Aquinas speaks of the person transformed by love. Moderns philosophers laud caring, empathy, and sympathy. All of these move in the difficult direction of otherness — getting beyond self and sensing the needs of others.
Mercy acts not only to end the distress of those in need, but extends to those who have wronged us and, in strict justice, “deserve” less. Community service is a natural extension of mercy.
