Vision
Standout: with Strong Hearts and Strong Minds
Mission Statement
A Champion ... A Champion Coach
If you haven't read his book of reflections and observations from on and off the court it is a great read.
I wanted to share just one passage from it. pg. 159
"There was pressure as we approached trying or setting various records, but it was always the pressure I put on myself to get our team ready to play an opponent. That was the pressure, not an obsession with winning. The real pressure during the week was put on me by me to make absolutely sure I did everything I could do to make sure our team was prepared properly. I liked to think that by game time my work was virtually done, that I could almost go up into the stands and watch the game without saying a word because my team was so well prepared. I wouldn't literally go into the stands, of course, but I knew that if I did watch a team of mine from up there, I would be able to tell by their effort and performance whether I had done my job in preparing them during the previous week. I was so comfortable before most games that I could take a nap if I wanted to. Thus, when UCLA was establishing various records, I believe the rest of my family got more excited about it than I did. Though I was pleased with the titles and championships, I mainly derived satisfaction from the preparation and knowing that I had done everything I could do to get the team ready. That is what pleased me most, regardless of what anybody else thought, be they the alumni, the public, or the media. As Pearl Mesta said, "Those that matter don't mind and those that mind don't matter." The praise or criticism you receive elsewhere doesn't matter. Those who know you, who really know you, that's what matters. Those who don't know you? Doesn't matter."
Each week, you are preparing your students for the game. You are preparing them to be successful. You are preparing them by giving them the skills they need to be successful in the next grade.
Coach Wooden wasn't focused on the championships, the score, the titles ... He was focused on the day to day operations of practice and his team. He focused on preparing this team the best he could. He focused on doing all the little things right. We spent last week recognizing each other for all the little things that happen in our building that add up to BIG THINGS. I think the best part of this is that these little things happen even when no one is looking. It is the people doing their best and doing what is best for students even when no one is LOOKING!
This same coach who focuses on doing the little things right and doesn't worry about who is praising or critiquing him, unless that person is worthy to give praise and criticism, also said in his book that winners make the most mistakes. What? That sounds odd but what he said was that if you aren't pushing yourself to grow and try new things and stepping outside your box then you won't make as many mistakes BUT you also will not get any better or grow in anyway!
Growth Mindset. This is the mindset we push on our students and they need it to be successful but are we pushing this mindset our ourselves and on our team? Do we encourage our teammates to have a growth mindset? Do we give them a mirror check when they come to us? If we aren't doing this then we are not pushing our team, we are not helping our team to grow.
This week as we begin our first week of the pineapple board let's see our team in action and help our team grow! Will you step outside your comfort zone?

StandOUT Award --- Picture to Come
Mrs. Brown passed the StandOUT to Coach Mo.
"Coach Mo is a STANDOUT for kids. She is always being helpful, selfless, and taking the time to teach others and asking questions so that she can learn new techniques in interventions to best serve our students. She also builds some pretty cool things for SES students in the gym to challenge them. She also spends time working and helping student with their behavior plans. She is a true example of standing out with a strong heart and mind!"

- Procedures are looking great. Make sure you are holding your students accountable and to high expectations. If you need behavior tools or ideas for helping students to be focused or motivated then please let Mrs. Benton or I know so we can help. Remember, we can't use "opponents" or "barriers" as excuses. It's not ok to say ... well they just can't focus or I can't get them to pay attention or their behavior is keeping them from getting it. -- Ask for help! The answers are in the building. We MUST figure it out!
- Make sure you are pulling up the car rider document EVERY DAY! It is so important that students know if they are on a number! If there is a sub in your grade then please make sure those students can see it too! We have so many car riders that this time makes a huge difference when we can't get out the doors early enough because we are trying to figure out numbers. We are going to run 8 PAWS this week to try and help our line move faster. We may need extra help on car duty to help cover this and then we will get a set schedule out if we keep the 8th PAW.
- Thank you for all the help with bus duty as well! They are doing pretty good. The goal is to just not hold them so long in the halls or cafe. It is just setting them up for failure by holding them. As soon as most are there, send out the first round and then as soon as that first round is out send bus #27 out and then the others.
