Filling sails with knowledge and character for a successful life voyage

Progress Reports issued to all students in Grades 1-4

All students in grade 1-4 came home today with a progress report to share with their parents. We also mail copies to all parents who live at a different residence than their child and have provided us with their address.

Please review this report carefully and contact your child's teacher if you have any questions or concerns. The first report card (for grades K-4) will be issued on December 4th. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held from 12:30-7:00 pm on December 7th and 8th. There will be no school for students on these two days in December.

#4 in the State of RI for 4th Grade Science NECAP % of students proficient - Spring 2015

4th Gr. Science NECAP Scores

We recently learned that our former 4th grade cohort had the 4th highest percentage of students who were Proficient or Proficient with Distinction on the Spring 2015 Gr. 4 Science NECAP Assessment. Our teachers in grades K-4 are extremely dedicated in their lesson planning, facilitation and assessment practices. They attend ongoing Science trainings with GEMS-Net Staff at URI. We are thrilled with our scores!!!

Other Great Statistics:

#1 in the percentage of students who were proficient amongst the 4 Chariho elementary schools

#2 in the State (below the Compass School) for Districts with the highest percentage of students who scored proficient or greater.

Attendance Counts

From - see data below

This is interesting data! I wonder why there are more students who are chronically absent in our earliest and latest years of schooling? At our level, we know that our younger students can struggle with communicable illness, especially if this is a child's first experience in a large group setting. Perhaps this attributes for the higher percentages of chronically absent students in grades K and 1.

Importance of Assessment

Some of our teachers are trying a website and app called Plickers to create formative (short assessments) and then use a device to quickly scan student responses. Students hold up QR code cards in a certain direction based on their multiple choice answer. The teacher scans the responses with a smartphone or iPad of each student card around the classroom. Teachers immediately know how students responded and can adjust their current lesson or future lessons based on this data.

Our instruction is most successful when we know what students already know and what they are struggling with during our lessons. Therefore, assessment is a critical component of the instructional cycle!

Head Lice

We have a few confirmed cases of head lice. The primary symptom of this condition is an itchy head. The condition spreads from head to head contact as the bugs do not fly. Most cases of head lice are spread outside of school in locations where children share towels, hats and/or have lots of head to head contact, such as at sleep overs.

There are many You Tube videos that you can watch to see what live head lice and nits look like on a child's head. You can also learn how to check your child at home.

While this is not one of our favorite tasks as parents, it is much better to identify and treat the condition early as prolonged head lice can be very uncomfortable for your child, both physically and emotionally.

If you would like more information please call Mrs. Coulson, our amazing and helpful nurse.
