CANstruction
HELP NEEDED! FEED VALPO!
Attention Heavilin Families...
The Valparaiso Elementary STEM teachers are hosting a STEAM show at Valparaiso’s Urschel Pavilion on April 28th. Part of our event includes a CANstruction Junior engineering competition. Each VCS elementary school has a CANstruction team comprised of 5th grade students. The teams will compete, and build a CONSTRUCTION entirely out of CANS! This year’s theme is “FOOD”. Awards will be given at the end of the event. All of the CANNED GOODS collected will be DONATED to the Valparaiso Community Schools Backpack program and any overflow will go to Hilltop’s Food Pantry.
The Heavilin team is going to be constructing a PINEAPPLE! We are in need of YELLOW cans for the exterior of our CANstruction. The interior cans can be any type of 15 oz. or 16oz. canned good.
Here’s how you can help the FIRST EVER Heavilin CANstruction team….
Send in 15 oz. or 16 oz. canned goods AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
If you can send in any of the following brands, you can help with the exterior of our CANstruction.
Red Gold tomato sauce products
Del Monte fruit products
Old El Paso tex-mex brand products
Our CANstruction will be on display in the DISPLAY CASE outside of the library while we’re collecting cans during March and April. On April 28th it will be TRANSPORTED and built LIVE at the STEAM SHOW at Central Park. Mark your calendar for that date if you’d like to see the team in action!
Thanks for ANY help!

Music Notes
Our 4th and 5th grade classes recently enjoyed a mini unit on guitars. Mr. Chad Clifford of Front Porch Music provided two lessons on guitar basics. This unit was provided by the Gary Webster Young Musicians Program which was established in honor of former VCS teacher, Gary Webster who passed away a few years ago. Two Heavilin students from 4th and 5th grade will soon be awarded a scholarship for 12 guitar lessons.
Concert Series update: On Wednesday, April 11 the 2nd and 3rd grade classes will be presenting special concerts for family and friends. The 2nd graders will perform at 6:30 and the 3rd graders will perform at 7:15. More details will be sent home as the concert date approaches.
Also, 4th and 5th grade families should mark their calendars for Thursday, May 10 for their concerts date.
The 4th/5th grade choir is in full swing for the second semester. Our spring choir concert will be Tuesday, May 15. Parents, please remember to send Mrs. Bongard an email or call the office if your child is unable to attend a choir rehearsal.
Girls Basketball Camp
The Valparaiso Girls Elementary Basketball Camp is coming to Heavilin Elementary School from March 19th to March 22nd. Campers will be able to stay after school and have fun working with Valparaiso High School Head Girls Basketball Coach Candy Wilson, and her staff and players, to improve on their basic basketball skills. Camp forms will be handed out to girls by your homeroom teachers this week and are also available in the Main Office or on the Girls Basketball Website, https://valpogirlsbballclub.wixsite.com/valpogirlsbasketball
