From the Nurse
When Your Child is Sick at School
Our clinic at Carlisle is very small. We are not equipped to maintain students in the clinic for extended periods of time. During our difficult cold and flu season there are sometimes multiple students waiting to be picked up from school, all of whom are likely to be contagious. It is best for them as well as the other students and staff if they are removed quickly from school. We appreciate it when parents can pick up their child quickly after a call from the nurse. It is expected that parents will make every effort to come for their child within thirty minutes. Please make arrangements with a friend or family member who can help you out if your work situation does not permit you to come for your sick child in a timely manner.
Cold and Flu Season is Upon Us!
Although the rate of illness at Carlisle has not spiked yet, we are hearing from other nearby campuses that the flu has arrived in Plano in a big way. Parents, we need your diligence in keeping sick children home from school. We all have a responsibility to prevent the spread of illness. Remember that students should stay home a full 24 hours after a fever, without the need for fever reducing medication, before returning to school. The same policy applies to students who have vomiting or diarrhea. There should be no vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours and the student should be able to eat normally without a problem.
The common cold always presents a problem. There is often no fever. However, students whose symptoms are persistent or who cannot manage their symptoms (think Snot Monsters!) should stay at home.
Please remember that all medications are to be processed through the nurses office. The authorization form is available on the PISD website at: http://www.pisd.edu/parents/health/documents/MedAuthEngPro11-2015_002.pdf
We cannot stress enough the importance of effective HANDWASHING. Give me 5!
1. Water first. Always wet the hands thoroughly to begin.
2. Soap is next.
3. Scrubbing for 20 seconds. Don’t forget the back of the hands and in between fingers.
4. Rinse thoroughly.
5. Dry
EVEN COUGH DROPS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE MEDICATION!
Parents, cough drops and throat lozenges rarely contain any cough suppressing medication, however, PISD does require a medication authorization form. At school, students with a cough and / or sore throat are offered a salt water gargle, peppermint to suck on and frequent drinks of water. This is often just as effective or even more so than a cough drop.
Take a Taste Tuesday
This week Mr. Llamas and Mrs. Rodee / Chapel’s classes got to taste tomatoes to celebrate the letter “T”. But these were not just any tomatoes, they were Sungold cherry tomatoes. We learned that the smaller varieties of tomatoes have more natural sugar and the Sungold tomatoes have a fruity, tropical flavor. We often think of tomatoes as being a vegetable but we know they are actually a fruit. Tomatoes are delicious raw or cooked and make a great addition to salads or on burgers. Better yet, they are a great snack. Tomatoes are high in Vitamins A,C and K and potassium. Cherry tomatoes are a fun item to grow in a big pot on your patio. Kids and families really enjoy growing their own food. It might also entice your picky eater to try something new if they have had a hand in growing it themselves. Put cherry tomatoes on your shopping list this week; better yet – some cherry tomato seeds!
What is Walk and Roll Wednesday?
Every Wednesday we encourage parents and students to walk to school or ride their bikes to school. This is a great opportunity to teach your children safe routes to school as well as general community safety. It is also a great choice for your health. Students start their day with a little exercise and fresh air and our environment benefits from fewer emissions from cars. What could be better? Remember your helmet if you are coming to school on wheels.
Each Wednesday morning at 7:10, Miss Grace and a committed group of staff members join with students to “Walk and Roll.” We invite all students to join us between 7:10 and 7:25 am. During that time we take a few laps along the south side of the building and up the trail up to the bridge and back. We have a few participation rules that we ask the students to follow:
Show kindness and respect to each other and the adults in charge.
Walk!
Single file along the carpool lane - walking away from the lane of traffic.
School breakfast comes first. If you eat breakfast at school you must go inside first to eat.
Dress for the weather. We walk every Wednesday, no matter how cold it is, unless it is raining.
We initiated the school walk since many children come on a bus or have no choice but to ride to school in a car. All students are welcome to join us, even if they walked or rode to school. Parents, you may certainly join us too!
Friendly Reminders -
Carlisle’s Open House: Next Thursday, March 2nd, 6:00-7:00 p.m. Students in each grade level are very excited and anxious to share different learning activities they have experienced throughout the year. We look forward to seeing you!
Please remember to keep your child’s emergency contact information up to date on the Parent Portal. Only those contact persons listed on the emergency form may pick your child up at school. Updating all medical information on this form is important since this document would go with your child to the hospital in the event of an emergency. Be sure to list all allergies and all medications that are taken regularly.
Please observe morning and afternoon car pool procedures. Signs have been appropriately placed to ensure student safety. Your cooperation to adhere to these traffic policies and procedures is very important as they were established for the safety of your child as well as all children.
