Week of November 8, 2019
The First Snow of the Season!
The first week of November was busy with teacher professional development, finalization of our first quarter report cards, and the first snow of the season!
Students were reminded during morning announcements that wood chips, leaves, sticks, rocks, and snow should remain on the ground or where they found it when on the playground. Throwing leaves and snow in the air is part of childhood fun; however, when in large groups, such as school playground time, the leaves and snow always seem to find another students' eyes, face, or body, even if there was no intention to have the thrown item hit another student.
Morgan is celebrating a Wellness Weekend over the Thanksgiving Break. The flyer for our Wellness Weekend is located further below in this newsletter. There will be no projects, assignments, test preparation, during the long weekend break. Morgan would like staff, students, and families to unplug and enjoy the weekend with family and friends.
The annual Morgan Penny Wars start next week and run throughout the week. Bring in the loose change from home and the family vehicle to participate in the friendly competition between U of M and MSU. There is more information in the flyer below.
If you are struggling with Power School Parent Portal, don't forget to come to Morgan on Wednesday, November 13, between the hours of 5-7 PM. One of our UCS technology experts will be in the Media Center Computer Lab to help parents with their Power School account. Power School is used for grade in the upper elementary grades, attendance for all grades.
As the season starts to fill up with activities, family gatherings, special visits, short trips, continued sports games, and the shopping season, please put aside some time for students to continue to read at home. This is a perfect time to slow down and enjoy a good book together read aloud. Take a look at the reading chart below to see the benefits of reading at home each night.
Have a great week!

Fall/Winter Illness
Per the UCS Elementary Student Handbook
Preventing Illness
The best way to prevent illness is to encourage healthy habits such as:
• Hand Washing – dirty hands are a primary cause of infection. Children should always wash their hands before eating and after using the bathroom or wiping their nose. Make sure your child thoroughly washes all surfaces of his or her hands vigorously with soap and water, rinses them well and dries them with a paper towel.
• Good Nutrition – eating nutritious food, especially at breakfast, helps children concentrate.
• Rest and Sleep – most children need at least eight hours of sleep each night.
• Exercise – physical fitness is important to good health. Children can get their exercise through outdoor play, organized sports or family activities.
• Good Hygiene – children are more comfortable and have a better attitude about themselves and their schoolwork when they are clean and neatly groomed. Check your child’s appearance before he or she walks out the door.
Recuperating at Home
When is your child too sick to attend school? The following guidelines, along with the advice of your family doctor, will help you decide when your child should stay home:
• Cold and/or cough – a child with deep mucus that causes a cough and heavy nose drainage cannot function at school.
• Fever – fever is a warning that something is wrong. A child should remain at home for 24 hours after the fever is gone without the use of medication.
• Rash – a rash, spots or blotches on the skin can be the first sign of many illnesses. Rashes require a physician release stating they are not contagious.
• Stomach Ache/Upset – a child who is vomiting or has diarrhea should be kept at home and may return 24 hours after the symptoms are gone.
• Head Lice – a child with head lice must remain at home until treatment is complete and school officials confirm he or she is free of lice. Check your child’s head before school begins in the fall and routinely during the school year or if he or she complains of an itchy scalp. Look around your child’s ears and back of the neck for nits, which are tiny, white, oval-shaped lice eggs that are attached to the hair near the scalp. Nits may look like dandruff or scalp flakes, but nits do not move and are difficult to dislodge. Notify the school office immediately if your child has head lice. Begin treatment immediately by contacting your doctor or purchasing over-the-counter medication from the drug store. To prevent spreading head lice, wash all infested garments, hair accessories, bedding and other surfaces with hot water and disinfectant. You must sign your child in at the office when he or she is returning to school after treatment for head lice.
Green Team Candy Wrapper Collection
The first Green Team activity is to collect empty candy wrappers for recycling. There is a box located in the lobby, by the white PTO chalk board, to put empty candy wrappers. The Green Team will collect and recycle.
Please send in your CLEAN empty wrappers in a ziploc bag or paper bag for donation.
Fall Coat Drive
The troop is looking for 40 more coats to reach their goal! Check those closets!
There are two bins at Morgan to collect donated coats. The troop will collect until November 12.
Morgan Annual Food Drive
The past few years, Morgan has collected more food items than Malow Junior High and other surrounding elementary schools who participate. Let's keep the trend going and donate non-perishable food items for local Helping Hands food pantry.
Eisenhower NHS Tutoring
Parents may register their students by submitting a request located on our website:
http://ikenhs.weebly.com/eagle-tutoring.html.
This will allow us to prepare adequate tutors for each subject matter. We ask that parents complete the form by Sunday night each week in order to allow us to organize the correct number of NHS students.
Their goal is to provide a safe and productive environment for both students needing help and our NHS members offering their service. Additionally, a staff member will be on site every week checking in registered students and monitoring the sessions.
