Staff Announcements
Welcome to the 2019-20 School Year
Dear Chico Unified,
Welcome back to our returning staff and a hearty welcome aboard to our new CUSD family members. Last year was one of the most challenging times ever faced by our community due to the ravages of the Camp Fire. I am hopeful that the summer provided a chance for each of you to relax, enjoy time with family and friends and begin the recovery process. Opportunities to recharge are essential and even more so following the challenges faced last year.
While the immediate crisis is now ten months in the past, we will feel the ramifications for years to come. It is important to remember this as we welcome each other and our students and their families in the upcoming days. Education is one of the most demanding professions, and also one of the most important. Do not ever forget the positive impacts you make every day on the lives of students. As you already do so well, continue to praise and lift our students to even higher levels of accomplishments.
Chico Unified is comprised of strong, positive and incredibly competent educators at every level. Every one of us—from campus supervisors to counselors, custodians to classroom aides, transportation to maintenance, nutrition services to teachers and administrators—contributes in a unique way to meet the needs of our students and community. The incredible strength, determination and profound optimism of Chico Unified staff members, even in the most devastating of times, continues to provide hope for our students and community. I cannot thank you enough for all each of you do every single day.
While we have seen several changes over the summer, our Chico Unified Leadership team is more committed than ever to supporting and empowering our amazing staff. I encourage you to share your stories of comradery, mastery and community by submitting your accolades, shout-outs and photos throughout the year so that we can share with the rest of our Chico Unified community.
I know we have much to do in the upcoming year, and I look forward to working with you as we continue to make positive impacts in the lives of children.
Sincerely,
Kelly Staley, Superintendent

Keynote Speaker - Kay Frances
"I spent many years as a professional standup comedian, including living and performing in New York City. I came to see the value of humor for our overall well-being and how therapeutic it is. Plus, it just feels good to laugh! So, I want people to leave my presentations feeling good. But, I also want them to have valuable tools to continue this good feeling into their lives; not only humor, but optimism and other “feel-good” emotions that are the key to success in life."

SUMMER HAPPENINGS AROUND CHICO UNIFIED
Early Back Intensive Language Star Institute
"Early Back Intensive Language Star Institute started at Chapman yesterday! We are focusing on narrative reading and writing so that students can write their own narrative story to share with their parents at the end. Participating teachers and instructional aides are here from; McManus, Parkview, Shasta, and Chico High. Students from: Chapman, Rosedale, Shasta, McManus, Parkview, Marigold as well as a few junior high school students are attending.
Teachers began a four-day training the week of July 23rd. Early Back began on July 29th and runs Monday to Thursday through Thursday, August 8th. We would like to invite you to stop by if you have a chance in the next couple of days to see how hard our teachers and students are working. Classes run from 8:15 to 12:00. On the last day (August 8th), we will be editing and revising student stories and sharing them with parents. Thank you to Principal Mike Allen for allowing us to use your campus and seeing the importance of this valuable program."

Tri Counties Bank Partners with Fair View High School
Thank you Kristen Shelton for your commitment to financial education and your continued services to our youth!
Kristen started volunteering with Fair View High School over seven years ago. Once or twice a year, she visits Ms. Boones Sr. History and Economics class(s). Together, they cover a variety of topics from how to choose a bank to establishing and protecting credit.
Ms. Boone wrote a beautiful letter on behalf of Kristen Shelton.
Dear Tri Counties Bank,
Mrs. Shelton has provided an invaluable service to my senior Economic students at Fair View High School. She has a natural ability to connect with students and offer them hope in their financial future. Her presentation is organized and energetic! She has designed an interactive lecture which keeps the students engaged and asking questions. From role-play to pop quizzes- Kristin strives to stay engaged and really focus on what the class wants to learn.
The information Kristen provides is very well prepared and extremely useful to young adults. She covers the following :
· Setting and Reaching Goals
· Checking and Savings Accounts
· The Four C’s of Credit
Kristen Comments: Fairview High School holds a deeply seeded place in my heart. The opportunity to assist in building the bridge that will guide these students over life hurdles to the path of success is one I do not take lightly. This is truly why I love what I do!
