SWITZER Update

Update from Mr. Palmer
Hello Switzer families,
Conferences have been scheduled for Thursday, February 8. Your teacher will reach out to you to confirm the day and time. This conference period is by request only and please remember that just because a conference is requested, that does not mean it is a concern or a problem to address. If you feel you need to meet with your teacher, please reach out to them.
As we close out the first month of 2024, we prepare for the end of winter, maybe. We also gear up for Kindergarten Open House scheduled for Wednesday, March 6 at 7pm. All Utica elementary buildings will be hosting a meeting. Please make sure to share this day with your friends and neighbors. We can all relate to the day when we had to prepare to send our first child to school. The uncertainty and questions can create some anxiety with new parents. Please encourage them to attend the open house and all information, including registration, can be found online at uticak12.org.
Stay warm!

Outdoor Recess
Recess is an important part of the school day. It gives the children a chance to release some of their pent-up energy, and clear their minds for the remainder of the school day.
All students are expected to go out for recess, unless we have a doctor's note saying they must stay inside. This is true even during warmer months.
At Switzer, students will go out for recess whenever the wind-chill is 10 degrees or higher (aka "feels like temperature). We use weather.com to determine the wind-chill.
Proper clothing for outside recess is a necessity. Children should dress warmly with gloves, scarves, boots, coats and hats. Children may not remain in the classroom when their class goes out for recess, since the teachers go outside also.
Please remember we all shop at Amazon, Kohls and Target. Putting initials on glove tags, coat tags and hat tags help keep the lost and found from over flowing.
Switzer Choir Opportunity (Eagletones)
Dear Parents,
Hello, Hello! I am excited to announce that a very special section of the Switzer Choirs is starting- The Eagletones will be starting soon! Any 3-6th student who loves to sing, practice, and perform and can commit to weekly practices is welcome to join the Eagles. All members must exhibit excellent classroom behavior, be able to follow directions, and be able to work as a team. There is no prior knowledge required; however, a respect and appreciation for singing are a must.
Practices are held Mondays from 3:15-4:30pm in the music room.
Attendance is important should your child choose to participate. Although I know unexpected events may happen and will of course be excused, please note that three unexcused absences will result in not being able to perform with us. Please contact me directly with any absences (raven.ross@uticak12.org)
Thank you so much for helping make this a great rest of the year! I look forward to making music with all of you. Please take the next week to decide if you would like to sign up for choir and we will begin on Monday, January 29rd at 3:15pm in the music room. I am looking forward to an exciting semester at school and in choir!
Musically yours,
Raven L. Ross

Please note – calendar change for 2023-24 school year
Safety remains a priority in Utica Community Schools.
The State of Michigan has announced that it will hold a presidential primary on Tuesday, February 27th. Our schools remain the centerpiece of the community, and we are proud that many of our school facilities are used to support the voting process. During these elections, school facilities need to be open and easily accessible to allow voters to cast their ballots.
As has been the practice of UCS for past elections, there will be no school on Tuesday, February 27. The cancellation of school maintains our commitment to safety and allows our facilities to be open for community members to cast their ballots.

SWITZER ELEMENTARY Drop Off Lane Procedure
For the safety of all Switzer students please follow our drop off procedure.
The drop off lane, designated in blue on the map (below), is intended for unassisted, curbside drop off. Vehicles should enter the parking lot and proceed to the ‘Welcome’ area. Students should quickly exit the vehicle. Students must exit out the passenger side/curbside only. Vehicles should pull forward and exit the parking lot. Arriving vehicles should continue to pull forward, allowing students to exit the vehicle in the ‘Welcome’ area.
Students that need assistance, parents should park in a parking spot as opposed to using the drop off lane. The student should be walked to the crosswalk by a parent.
TO KEEP OUR STUDENTS SAFE:
* Only drop off students in the designated area.
* Do not park or wait in the drop off ‘Welcome’ area at any time.
* Stay in the drop off lane and move forward in an organized manner.
* Do not drop off or park in any areas indicated with the red circle/car symbol. Occupying these areas will potentially stop the flow of the drop off lane traffic.
* Accompany students to the crosswalk if parking;
do not let students walk through the parking lot alone.
