JAES Counselor Connection Update
News from Ashley Marlow, JAES School Counselor
What's new for the 2017-18 School Year?
My teaching/counseling schedule has changed this year. I will see Connections Classes once a month. We will work on making good choices, being better friends and staying safe. During the remaining three weeks each month I will be focused on individual and small group counseling and consultation with teachers. I will be able to facilitate lunch bunches, small groups for students going through grief or divorce, or other topics, as needed. This new schedule will allow me to work with more students in a more focused manner. I am excited about this change and can't wait to see how the year goes!

What is a Lunch Bunch?
Lunch Bunch is a time for me to meet with students in small groups away from academic classroom time. We focus on getting to know one another through conversation and games. Since it is also lunch time, we also eat together!
I send invitations to students for Lunch Bunch the week before they are to come eat with me. The classroom teachers distribute these and then I meet the kids in the cafeteria and walk them to my room. There is no need to do anything different on Lunch Bunch day. Students may still go through the cafeteria line to get their lunch before coming to my room. And sometimes I go through the line too!
Parent Book Club 2017-18
I am excited to offer a parent book club during each semester this year. During the fall semester we will be reading Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood by Lisa D'Amour. This is NOT just for those of us with teenagers already. It is for anyone parenting or raising young ladies today. If you are interested, our next meeting will be Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7:30am in my room. We will be discussing the Introduction and Chapter 1. Anyone is welcome at any time!
In the spring semester we will be reading a book about raising our young men. Look for more information to come about the book and times closer to Winter Break.
What does a school counselor do anyway?
Take a look at this short read to learn more about the services I offer ALL students at John Adams. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me!
