What better land than Maryland? By Jeremy Banks
In the Beginning
Maryland is a southern colony that was founded in 1632 by a bishop named George Calvert, along with a hoard of Catholics who wanted their own territory separate from the protestants. Because this was a predominantly Catholic colony, and because Mary is a significant figure in the Catholic religion, the territory was consequently named Maryland.
