Week 13 Christmas Term 14th November 2014

SJI International Elementary, Singapore

A Lasallian International School

IPC

The children have been busy making posters on their chosen explorer. They have become quite competent at gathering information from a range of sources - using ipads, computers and books. The ebooks from the library have been a popular choice! This week included working in groups to gather their information.

We had a visitor this week who has climbed the 'Seven Summits'. This was an exceptional presentation and the children were very engaged throughout the morning. They got to see and handle the equipment used for climbing. Mr Rob Hart (Max's father) shared many stories of his adventures and taught the children many facts while showing the slides from his seven climbs. Thank you Mr Hart!

LANGUAGE ARTS

Reading

Our Café Strategy of 'Use text features (titles, headings, captions, graphic features) to locate information' integrates with our explorers unit and we have been researching a variety of non fiction books. We also applied this in our guided reading groups for our research on explorers.

Writing

In Writing Workshop, we continue with our author study of Tomie DePaola and Patricia Polacco. The children have read a variety of the author's books looking and comparing different ways authors write. They are enjoying writing their own narratives.

Our Handwriting focused on the joined-up letters of 're'.

Spelling

We have been learning the spelling rules of prefixes and root words.

We started the week with our Grammar focus on adjectives and then moved on to adverbs. We will continue to consolidate our knowledge of adverbs next week.

Maths

In Maths this week we reviewed our learning of the chapter on Multiplication and Division and begun learning about the Multiplication tables of 2, 5 and 10. We learned how to skip count, quickly and accurately, in 2s, 5s and 10s and applied this skill to learning our 2 and 5 times tables using songs and games. Next week we will continue working on our multiplication tables and will begin to learn the 10 times table, as well as consolidate our learning of the 2 and 5 times tables.
