Message from the Principal
Dear Central Road Families,
Please join me in welcoming Mr. Mauro’s new daughter, Gabriella Kimberly Mauro. She was born on Monday, February 24th. Mr. Mauro and his family are so excited to welcome their new bundle of joy into their family.
We hope to see you at our Open House event on Thursday, February 27th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Students will showcase their hard work from their classrooms. We encourage you to bring your children, so they can explain their work.
The Board of Education approved additional construction at Central Road. Our vestibule will be secured this summer. In addition to the secure vestibule, our office space will be expanded and remodeled.
Please remember to turn in forms for Rainbows, they are due on Monday.
Students in Ms. Stiens, Ms, Torres, Mrs. Divizio, Ms. Cibulka, Ms. Cortes, Ms. Holmes and Mrs. Candela’s classroom did a wonderful job during their musicals this week! A special thank you to Mrs. Morris for teaching the students to prepare them for the performances.
Let’s make it a great week!
Warmest Regards,
Patti Van Winkle
Principal
PE helps students build social skills, reduce stress and increase their academic focus
Everyone knows that Physical Education (PE) and recess are great for getting out the extra energy our students have! This is especially true in the winter with less daylight for children to play outdoors after school. But did you know that physical education and exercise are also great for building our students’ social skills, reducing their stress levels and even increasing their academic focus? It's true!
Build Social Skills: Ask a student what their favorite subject is in school and most will report PE class and lunch! Why? These are the less structured times in our students’ day where they can socialize with friends, relax, and most importantly, have fun. They may not realize it, but these are important life skills that will follow them throughout their lives. Having time to practice taking turns in conversation, relating to the thoughts and feelings of others, and learning how to have fun in a safe and nurturing environment are very important parts of education.
Reduce Stress: Students all over the world are reporting higher levels of stress than previous generations. This statistic alone makes it very important for students to have exercise incorporated into their home lives and their school day. Physical exercise releases endorphins that helps students feel calm, regulated, and ready to learn.
Increase Focus: Have you ever been sitting for awhile and noticed your leg is bouncing up and down? This phenomenon is the result of pent up energy from sitting in the same place for an extended period of time. As much as teachers try to keep kids moving and engaged in classroom activities, being seated for long periods of time is sometimes unavoidable. These are the days PE class is even more important! Time spent in PE class, in addition to recess, allows students to expend the pent up energy that, left unaddressed, can lead to fidgeting and decreased attention spans.
Our dedicated PE department staff stay on top of best practices and pull out all the stops to connect with what students are interested in -- from the “on trend” craze in music or the latest TikTok dance -- to get students on the move in challenging PE classes, daily for our junior high students and twice weekly for grades 1-6. Elementary classroom teachers are encouraged to lead “in the classroom” movement activities on alternate days, too.
Interested in ways to incorporate more movement into your child’s life after school?

Census 2020
Every 10 years, the United States counts the people in this country. This process is called the Census. Everyone counts – babies, children, teens, adults and older adults.
The census is the way the federal government divides its funds among the states. Illinois receives about $20 billion to support critical services for our communities that fund public schools, Medicaid, Head Start, Title programs, and programs that help low-income households like free lunch and HUD. It’s estimated that $1,500 will be lost for every Illinois resident who is missed—an impact we’ll suffer until the 2030 Census!
It’s quick and easy to be counted, and also required by law to participate. Your response is safe, secure and confidential. This promise is protected by federal law. No other agencies can access this information, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In mid-March, households will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census. Households may respond online, by phone or by mail.
