Reading Discussion
Sometimes books can be mirrors, and sometimes they can be windows. Can you see yourself in the book's characters or setting? It's a mirror. Is the book about something completely different from your life? It's a window. We will be discussing how our books act as mirrors and windows this week.
Mentor Sentence
The streets fill with rainwater at the corners of every block.
Word Work
This week's root word is mania, meaning excessive excitement or enthusiasm; craze.
Mentor Text
Our mentor text this week is "Rain in New York" by Lisa Graff. It is a part of the novel Absolutely Almost, about a boy who is bullied at school. His best friend's family starts a reality show and his parents ignore him. Thankfully, he has a great not-a-babysitter who understands him.
Writing
This week we will be writing pieces similar to "Rain in New York." Think about ways you can imitate this writing by filling in the blanks: ________________ in __________________. Maybe you could write about Winter in Charlevoix or Midnight in My Backyard. We will do some brainstorming and then work on our own writing.
What is Mrs. Garver Reading?
I am reading I Am Fartacus by Mark Maciejewski. It is a very funny book about a boy named Chubb and his best friend Moby who play practical jokes all around their school.
