Message from Jeff and Yolanda
What is a school without sports to do? Find alternative activities for students to engage in and provide them an opportunity for competition with students from throughout the District. Paul Holimon has continued a tradition which former Spanish teacher Juan Romero started years ago and that is providing students space and time to hone their skills in chess and compete against others. Many days during lunch you can see Paul rolling out the cart with the chess mats into the dining room and students making their way to spend their lunch time enjoying a chess match while eating their lunch.
As a culminating activity, this past Saturday the CCPS District Chess Tournament was held at LWTC/LWTHS. Students from LWTHS, Barron Collier, Lely and Naples High competed in a double elimination tournament. Congratulations to Alejandro C. from Lely High School who won the tournament. You can see Jose Gutierrez, LWTHS student pictured above playing Alejandro C, the eventual champion, in the semifinal round.
But did you know that playing chess has some benefits that impact learning, including:
- It Improves concentration and memory because an individual has to focus on the objective of the game which is capturing the opponent’s king. To get there the power of concentration grows because the player has to keep track of their moves made and the opponent’s possible countermoves.
- It enhances reading and math skills. In the game, there is a great focus on problem-solving and manipulating variables. In addition, the cognitive process for reading requires decoding, thinking, comprehension, and analysis which is what is needed in the game of chess.
- Fosters logic and critical thinking. Throughout the game, “if-then” is constantly in play in the player’s mind.
So knowing the benefits of chess, we should expose more students to the game as it will benefit their learning. If you are interested in learning how to help students make that connection, contact Paul Holimon.

Have you been hearing the buzz about Clean Eating?
Clean eating is a simple food philosophy. The principle is to be more mindful of the foods you choose and eat more whole foods, which are in their natural state. Now is the time to look for unrefined, unprocessed (or minimally processed) foods and give up the highly processed, chemical-backed products that tend to fill our modern supermarket shelves. (those Cheetos that turn your fingers orange for example!)
“If you really think about it, clean eating is essentially stepping back in time to when processed foods and artificial ingredients didn’t even exist. The only food options available were real, whole foods, the way nature intended them.” By Lauren MacDonald
Clean eating isn’t something that can be change in a day. It’s something you work towards by slowly and consistently making healthier choices and changing up old habits.
You don’t have to be a vegan or vegetarian, but moving towards a more plant based diet ensures that you get as many fruits and vegetables at each meal as possible. (referenced by www.activebeat.com Diet and Nutrition News and Advice by Lauren MacDonald, May 13, 2018)
