A Note from the FAB President
Well, our school year certainly didn’t end the way we expected. There wasn’t a whole lot of pomp and circumstance, no spring concerts, no Art in the Burg. That being said, we still accomplished a lot. FAB supported the fall and winter fine arts events, funded a record amount of grants to our fine arts departments, awarded senior and summer camp scholarships, and wrote out 100 Grad Grams to recognize graduating seniors who were active in the arts at CHS. Our Board met recently to reflect on the year and plan for the fall, and we are optimistic about the year ahead.
As the school year comes to a close and we send out our final newsletter, I would like to personally thank this year’s FAB Board members for their dedication and contributions to keeping the arts vibrant at CHS and in our community:
- Sarah Going, Vice President
- Michelle Rishel, Treasurer
- Sherra Hintz, Secretary
- Stacy Mose, Art in the Burg
- Karen Miorin, Membership
- Michelle Keith, Grants & Scholarships
- Jan Batty, Programs
- Perrie Garland, Website & Newsletter
- Shelly Bell, CPAC Liaison
- Vicki Strohbach, Visiting Artist Series Concessions
Fine Arts Department Liaisons:
- Jennifer Carlson, Drama
- Liz Carr, Technical Theater
- Alisa Norquist, Art
- John Mose, Band
- Susan Hartman, Vocal Music
Looking toward the fall, we are seeking new board members to replace several individuals who will be moving on. This includes the roles of Treasurer, Art Liaison, Band Liaison, Vocal Music Liaison, and Grants & Scholarships Chair. If you are interested in getting more involved or know someone who would be a good fit, please reach out to me or Sarah Going at chsfineartsbooster@gmail.com for more information.
We are planning to hold our first meeting of the next school year on September 14, 2020. Please mark your calendar. We hope it will be in person!
With that, I wish you all a safe and healthy summer.
Yours in the Arts,
Caryn Esten, President

Band UPDATE: What a Year! So Much. So Different!
Thank you students, parents and volunteers for all you gave to the band program this year. 2019-20 will go down as rather memorable in many ways. Marching Band Camp; Forged Show, with our best score at State competition in four years!; Band Banquet; New Year’s Winter European Tour; Concert and Symphonic Bands Fall and Winter Concerts; Pep Band - Bucks game; CHS Football and Basketball games; Jazz Band - Concert; Lawrence University Jazz Celebration Weekend; Piggly Wiggly Bagging for Bucks; and of course, that virtual learning!
Best wishes and congratulations to all the seniors and scholarship winners. We will miss your spirit and leadership as you begin your new adventures! And thanks to the Band Boosters for the great goodie bags distributed to senior band members. Extra thoughtfulness in this unusual senior year is so appreciated.
Solo Festival Virtual Version: As the usual in-person Solo & Ensemble Festival was cancelled, WSMA-Wisconsin School Music Association created a virtual option for student solo performances. Over 20 CHS students participated at the district level. And those instrumentalists progressing and participating at the state level were: Maggie Eilbes, flute; Ella Himes, flute; Mark Himes, trumpet; Grace Mossberg, flute; Halle Throndson, parade drum; and Mario Truong, french horn. Congratulations to all!
Mr Hardt moving on from Cedarburg High School: It has been a great four years of forging ahead with our band students. Maestro - We thank you for sharing your knowledge, energy and passion for music with Cedarburg High School. We wish you and your family the best!
Rachael Stein named new CHS Band Teacher and Director. From Mr Kurth: “We are excited to share that pending Board approval on June 17th, CHS will welcome Rachael Stein as our new CHS Band Teacher and Director. Rachael spent last year leading the Grafton band and comes to us with very positive references about her energy, relationship with students, passion for marching band, and high quality instruction in the classroom. We are excited about the opportunities and direction that Ms. Stein will provide our students at CHS.”
This year, Ms. Stein received the Emerging Educator Award from the Civic Music Association of Milwaukee. She is a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she was a proud trumpet playing member of the UW Marching Band. In addition, she was a member of the Jazz Orchestra.
Summer Band Camp and Beyond: Tentatively July 26 - 31. Decisions on proceeding with school activities still rest within the state and health official guidelines. If summer band camp proceeds, it may look different and will be a decision made once summer guidelines have been shared with Wisconsin schools, and a new band leader is in place. Band families will be kept apprised. This will include our incoming CHS band families. Welcome!
Here’s to a FABulous 2020-21 school year!

CPAC UPDATE: Internship Openings for 2020-2021
The end of our current Visiting Artists Series has arrived, and we have some of our interns graduating. Therefore, I am recruiting younger students to fill those positions. Students involved with drama, choir and band are encouraged to volunteer.
The Visiting Artist Series consists of seven performances (September-May) with professional artists from around the country. They vary from, singers, musicians and dancers. My position as CPAC's "Artist Liaison" puts me in touch with tour managers and I make arrangements with them for backstage hospitality, merchandise sales, hotel, transportation, etc.. I then schedule/coordinate volunteer high school student interns to help out with hospitality and merchandise sales on performance dates. In addition to helping on show nights, interns get involved with some other tasks such as assembling the mailing for our Friends Campaign.
The volunteer internship time commitment is rather small and quite flexible throughout the school year. Realizing students are involved with various activities, we work with them on an "as needed" and "when available" basis. Very seldom, are all interns able to help at the same time. There are no set hours per week, but interns are called upon at the following times:
- Hospitality set-up, day before show
- Merchandise sales, evening of show
- Stuff inserts in programs (sometimes), the day before a show
- Assemble mailing for Friends Campaign, a few days after school in fall
- Additional duties as needed
Please visit the CPAC website: www.cedarburgpac.com and see more details about the Visiting Artists Series.
Interested students should contact Donna Doro at Cedarburg Performing Arts Center:

Business Ads in CHS Fine Arts Programs
It’s not too early to think about advertising your business in the playbills distributed at the Cedarburg High School fine arts events during the 2020-2021 school year. With over 500 seats in the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center, plays, concerts and musical events are attended by thousands of community members.
For one price, we will run your business ad in all playbills for the entire school year. As an added bonus, we will link your company’s website to the Cedarburg Fine Arts Booster club website, chsfab.org, to maximize your advertising reach.
We hope you will consider placing an ad – it’s a great opportunity to show support for the Fine Arts programs at CHS while gaining exposure for your business in the greater Cedarburg community. Funds raised by program ads support a variety of activities at the high school, including student scholarships, student workshops and grants for the Instrumental, Vocal, Drama and Visual Arts Departments.
