This is a good time for hugs, kisses and to let your children know how excited you are for them to begin kindergarten! We know it can be emotional, but we expect families to say goodbye at this time and stay in the cafeteria for a short orientation with kindergarten teachers, PTA, and administration. This short orientation will begin promptly at 8:30 and end at 9:00. All families are expected to attend.
Other important things to know for both days: Transportation is not provided, after school care is not available, and we will not have lunch. Please pick up your child in the lobby at 12:00. The only supplies needed for this day is a hearty snack. On this day, we will do many fun activities to get to know your child!
Transportation
Message from Transportation Department Regarding Bus Routes
The top priority of the CHCCS Transportation Department is the safe transportation of our students to and from school each day. To that end, we have assembled a team of well-trained, expert drivers with a stellar record of safe driving. Though there is a nation-wide driver shortage, with the help of our community we were able to hire four full-time and three part-time new drivers this summer, and have 12 potential drivers who have each passed the State test and will soon be finished with their course roadwork. They will be joining our force within the next month.
The beginning of school is always the most challenging season for Transportation. Due to the relocation of students, new families to the district, new construction, brand new Kindergarten students, and other factors, bus routes have to be adjusted or re-created. Members of our community may have noticed buses out on the roads in recent days. Those were our drivers practicing their routes in preparation for the start of school on Tuesday. While there are always a few hiccups in the first week, we have every reason to believe our first day of school will be smooth and efficient.
To confirm your family's specific bus information, please visit our transportation page. You can enter your street address and see your bus stop location and approximate pick up time.
If you experience any problems, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Transportation Office at 919-942-5045.
Here Comes The Bus App
"Here Comes the Bus is an easy-to-use website and app* that enables you to see the location of your child’s school bus on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer. This way, you know when the bus is near your stop, so you can send your child out at just the right time. If your district has the Student Ridership service as well, you can use the Here Comes the Bus website and app to see when your child has scanned on and off the bus." - Here Comes the Bus

Attendance Overview
Attendance Overview
One of the most important things parents can do is make sure that their children attend school regularly and on time. While some absences for illnesses are unavoidable, nothing can replace the educational, cultural and social contacts that students experience through regular participation in class. All students between ages 7 and 16 are required by law to attend school. Every child is expected to be at school every day unless sick or otherwise excused.
If Your Child Will Be Absent
Parents should notify the school office by early morning when their children will be absent from school. If no call is received by the school, the office will contact the parent or guardian by mid-morning.
Excused Absences
The State Board of Education allows excused absences for these reasons:
- Illness or injury
- Quarantine
- Death in the immediate family
- Medical or dental appointments
- Court or administrative proceedings
- Religious observances
- Educational opportunity
If possible, absences other than those for illness should be arranged in advance so that the student can begin to make up the work which will be missed. After a student has been absent, he or she should bring a written excuse, signed by the parent, stating the cause of the absence. All students are required to attend at least 83 percent of the total school days in an academic year in order to graduate or to be promoted to the next grade. Exceptions could be made in the case of excused absences and made-up work.
Note: Our high schools have developed their own policies on class attendance and credit.
Unexcused Absences
3 Unexcused Absences
After any student has accumulated three unexcused absences in a school year, the principal or his/her designee will notify the parent, guardian or custodian of the student that the student has been absent an excessive number of times.
6 Unexcused Absences
After six unexcused absences, the principal will notify the parent, guardian or custodian by mail that he/she may be in violation of the Compulsory Attendance Law and may be prosecuted if the absences cannot be justified under the established attendance policies of the state and district boards of education.
10 Unexcused Absences
After ten accumulated unexcused absences in a school year, the principal will review any report or investigation on the student’s absence and also confer with the student and his/her parent, guardian or custodian to determine whether the parent, guardian or custodian has received notification and made a good faith effort to comply with the law. If the principal determines that the parent, guardian or custodian has not made a good faith effort to comply with the law, the principal will notify the district attorney.
Tardies
Three unexcused tardies of fifteen minutes or more shall be treated as one unexcused absence under the State’s Compulsory Attendance Law.
