Oak Ridge NJROTC visits McGhee Tyson ANG Base
On Thursday, March 24, 2022, cadets from the Oak Ridge High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Wildcat Battalion made their way to the Tennessee Air National Guard Base located at McGhee Tyson Airport in Alcoa, TN. The tour of the base was made possible through the hard work of the Air National Guard recruiters, led by Technical Sergeant Jared Kidwell.
During the tour, the cadets visited base security, where they learned about the mission and weaponry of the ANG Security Forces. Master Sergeant Lewellyn spoke with the cadets about some of his deployments overseas and how the Air Force Security Forces work closely with the other services. The cadets were intrigued and asked lots of excellent questions.
After leaving the Security Department, the cadets made a short walk to the Fire Station where firefighters Kennedy and Johnston greeted them. Fireman Johnston allowed the cadets to get into their newest firetruck and operate the forward nozzle from inside the truck. The cadets thoroughly enjoyed the ease of its operation. Fireman Kennedy demonstrated many pieces of equipment used by firefighters. The cadets were allowed to pull around the 180-pound training dummy and don firefighting equipment (FFE).
Following the Fire Department tour, Technical Sergeant Kidwell took the cadets to the base dining facility to enjoy a great lunch. After lunch, the cadets boarded a bus for a short ride down the tarmac to a waiting KC-135 Air Refueling aircraft, which is part of the 134th Air Refueling Wing (AFW). Waiting for the cadets were Master Sergeant Spence and Technical Sergeant Humphrey, who showed the cadets around the outside of the aircraft and all its features, as well as the inside of the plane, to include the cockpit and the boom operator’s station. Upon completion of the aircraft visit, the cadets reboarded the bus back to the terminal, then departed the base enroute to Oak Ridge High School.
The cadets left excited about what they experienced and were grateful to all the Air National Guardsmen who took time to speak to them about their Air Force career field.
Oak Ridge (TN) NJROTC cadets visit NAS Pensacola
On Monday, March 14, on their first day of Spring break, 40 cadets and 3 chaperones from the Oak Ridge High School NJROTC Wildcat Battalion, departed via charter bus, bound for Pensacola, FL for a 5-day orientation trip.
On Tuesday morning, cadets took to the Coldwater Creek at Adventures Unlimited, to embark on a 7-mile canoeing excursion. Battling through the pouring rain, the cadets bonded together to help each other navigate the winding creek. This was a great experience, as many of the cadets had never canoed before. Later that evening, cadets were granted some shopping time at the Navy Exchange, before heading to Correy Station for a few hours of bowling.
Wednesday morning came, and the group boarded the bus and made their way to Mobile, AL to explore the USS Alabama and other static displays at Battleship Memorial Park. For many of the cadets, this was their first time seeing a Naval ship and were amazed by what they experienced. After the visit concluded, the group made their way to Foley, AL to experience Lambert’s Café for lunch. Many eyes were widened at the sight of an “incoming” hot roll as it was hurled their way. To cap off their day, the group spent the remainder of the evening at Splash Adventures in Pensacola, riding go-karts, playing laser tag, putt-putt, and many arcade games.
Thursday morning brought the cadets to Fort Pickens at Pensacola Beach. While there, they learned the history of the Fort and its significance in Naval history. While there, the group was treated to a “fly-over” from the Blue Angels, and this left them hungry to see them perform at the Smokey Mountain Air Show in Knoxville, TN in September of this year. After visiting the Fort, the cadets were afforded a few hours of “beach time” at Pensacola Beach. Following their time at the beach, the group made their way to the Naval Air Museum to explore the fascinating displays and learn some history of Navy and Marine Corps aviation. A few cadets took in the movie “Aircraft Carrier” on the museum’s big screen.
Friday morning, prior to departing for home, the group arrived at Naval Air Station Pensacola to tour the Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC). According to LT Ellis, the cadets from Oak Ridge are the first group to be permitted to tour NATTC since pre-COVID. The Navy and Marine Corps instructors were eager to share knowledge of their career field with the cadets. There were many questions asked and lots of information gathered. Cadets left NATTC with excitement about a possible career in aviation. Cadets left NATTC and made their way to the Navy Exchange Uniform Shop, where they loaded up on various Navy Swag, before making the 8-hour trip back to Oak Ridge.
This was the second orientation trip Oak Ridge NJROTC has completed in the past 4 months, as they participated in the Pearl Harbor Memorial 80th Anniversary Parade in December 2021.

You are soon to become alumni as members of the Class of 2021, the 79th graduating class of ORHS. The Foundation is seeking your help in continuing the story of Oak Ridge Public Schools’ memories, a story that began in the year of 1943-44. The first seventy-five years of those stories are chronicled in our book, "Celebrating 75 Years of Excellence in Education in the Oak Ridge Schools: 1943-2018". Since then, the Foundation has collected stories from each successive graduating class, storing those narratives on our website at http://www.orpsef.org/archives/Class We sincerely hope you will submit your memories and therewith help to memorialize the ORHS Class of 2022.
We solicit your creative thoughts and writing styles while also offering the following prompts as suggestions for topics of interest--this list is not exclusive:

o Describe a challenge (or challenges) faced in your schooling and who or what helped you overcome it.

SENIOR PARENTS - WORK ETHIC DISTINCTION CERTIFICATES
What is the certificate for?
The Oak Ridge Schools Board of Education has approved the attainment of a Work Ethic Distinction, a distinction that has been available for seniors since 2020. What it entails is students providing a certificate to potential employers that they have been demonstrating desirable work skills.
How do I earn this certificate?
Students are to attain 20 points from the list shown below the image of the certificate here. When they provide evidence of success on these measures, they will be awarded a Work Ethic Distinction Certificate that will serve as part of the student’s job application portfolio.
Logos of employers who have already indicated they are willing to grant preference in interviewing a student who presents a Work Ethic Distinction Certificate are included on the face of the certificate. The list of employers who want to join this effort is growing. An ongoing list of such partner employers will be kept at our local chambers of commerce.
Please have students download the application here and complete the applications for this distinction and return them to Dr. Holly Cross, Supervisor of Career Readiness—ORHS CS244 before April 1, 2022 for recognition at graduation.
