Vol. 2
Happy February, Indiana Coaches!
It's that time of year again: two-hour delays, ISTEP windows, & candy hearts. We are sure there are plenty of frustrating moments peppering your days, but we hope you find moments of inspiration and motivation as well. As you navigate this month, we'd like to offer both our kudos and support. Instructional coaches often fill multiple roles within a school and students across the state benefit from your drive and flexibility. Thank you for all that you do and let us know how your IDOE Literacy Specialists can support you!
Cadre Spotlight: Amy Lorch
Amy is an Instructional Coach for grades K-4 at Brookview Elementary. Amy, along with coach Mercedes Moore, initiated a K-6 reading assessment that focuses on the guiding and teaching of reading-not just assessing. Together, they trained all K-6 teachers in the district to conduct, analyze, and use results from Running Records.
Amy is also leading PD for those “next steps” in reading development. Her work has inspired teachers to increase the number of read alouds through a Read-Aloud Challenge. She also challenges colleagues to teach more explicitly in mini-lessons and guided reading groups. Amy said, “It is not perfect, but we are slowly getting there!”
