McFarland School Nutrition Meal Viewer App Information

McFarland School Nutrition Department is excited to announce a new form of communication for our menus with our new MealViewer app and online platform. We have installed a new MealViewer mobile app and web-viewer which is a major technology upgrade to bring our school in the Digital Age where school nutrition is concerned. This technological mobile app and web-viewer have the capacity to display the menus along with nutritional and allergen information for items served for breakfast and lunch. This new feature will also be an additional communication piece between meals and offering opportunities to display school announcements and events, and more. Below is a link to our “Introduction to MealViewer ” video which is a video that will help better explain exactly what MealViewer is and how useful it will be for you! There is also a video on how to use the mobile app.

Parents, please mark your child's name in their winter clothing: jackets, sweaters, hats, mittens. Many of these items are left at school and go to lost and found because they cannot be identified.

Weather Reminder

As a reminder, if the temperature reaches 0 degrees (combination of temperature and wind chill) or lower, students will have inside recess. Most days the students will have outside recess so please monitor what type of outerwear your child wears to school on these days so they are comfortable and dry out at recess.

Classroom Placement for 2018-2019

Throughout the spring and summer, our staff works through the process of determining class placement, with final decisions shared with families as a part of fall registration in August. Many factors go into this complicated and time consuming process as great care is taken to establish class rosters that support the unique needs of all learners. Please notes that while we DO NOT take parent requests for placing their child(ren) with a specific teacher or friend(s), we are open to parents' sharing details about teacher characteristics or classroom settings that we might consider when determining a student's best placement. If you are interested in sharing preferred teacher traits or classroom learning environment needs (without specific teacher names), please send an email or written note to the Principal at your child's school by Friday, March 2nd. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Ms. Murphy, Dr. Novak, or your child's teacher with any questions about this process.

From the Desk of Principal Novak...

Dear Families:

January 2018 proved to be an exciting month throughout the Elementary Campus and 4K! Our K-2 students returned to school ready to learn and we were pleased to celebrate our success with their continued work towards meeting our PBIS Expectations, Be Safe, Be Kind, and Be Responsible, during our January assembly. We were also proud to recognize four outstanding students from each grade level as “Kindness Coordinators.” Nominated by their teachers, these students were acknowledged for the way in which they regularly model and spread kindness to others in our learning community. Having recognized several students for being “Safety Specialists” during our November assembly, our staff is currently on the lookout for students who are acting like “Responsible Builders.” These students will be acknowledged for their superb responsibility during our March assembly. The Elementary Campus is proud to have a robust and exciting PBIS program that seeks to positively support and encourage student behavior success. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement of your Spartan Star student(s)!


January also included fun and educational field trips as our 2nd grade students visited the Overture Center for a showing of Mr. Popper’s Penguins and our 1st graders took in many natural wonders with their visit to the UW Geology Museum. Finally, the first month of the new year finished up with our first ever Book Character Dress Up Day where many students and staff shared their love of literacy through dressing up like a favorite book character. Roll call included characters from from across the genres including fan favorites Pete the Cat, Pinkalicious, Elephant and Piggy, and Clifford. A fun celebration of literacy for all!


With the arrival of February, we know that the 100th Day of School is making its way upon us. Arriving on February 13th this year, our kindergarten students are anxiously awaiting the celebration of all things ONE HUNDRED: 100 items to count, fantasies of being 100 years old, and making various number combinations to represent 100! Other February happenings to look forward to include our school wide assembly on the 2nd, the release of Report Cards via Infinite Campus on February 5th, Red, White, and Pink Spirit Day on the 14th, and Jump Rope for Heart fun on the 27th and 28th. As a reminder, Monday, February 26th is a Professional Development/Work Day for our teachers whereby students do not report for school.

Dear Waubesa Families -


It’s unbelievable to actually think we are already into the second semester of the school year! It is our goal to communicate with you formally at least four times during the year.

  • You would have met for parent-teacher conferences at the end of the first quarter.
  • Report Cards will be available on Infinite Campus February 5.
  • Another set of conferences will take place just before spring break.
  • We will then have report cards available after school is out in June.


We believe the first semester has been very successful. We are working on students having a growth mindset. Sometimes we hear "I can't do it" before students even try. Our hope is that students always give their best effort, knowing ability levels will be different. Additionally, we are working on always showing respect and being kind to each other. Your support in these efforts is much appreciated.

Waubesa Service Project

Thank you to the many families who contributed to our recent Food Drive at Waubesa. Just before winter break, our school donated 906 pounds of food and 186 pounds of non-food donations to the McFarland Community Food Pantry. Each classroom is continuing to collect cash donations for the food pantry and have a collection jar in the classroom. Your support in promoting this service project is appreciated. Research shows that when students know they are helping others they tend to feel better about themselves and view themselves as contributing members of the community. Our school-wide theme of the Power of One, Power of Team, and Power of Community is closely connected to this goal.

Read Aloud Day

Read alouds are part of each day here at Waubesa. They promote fluency, expression as well as conversations. Teachers can model reading strategies and introduce new vocabulary. Also, read alouds bring us together through a common experience. We can make connections with the text, ourselves and even the world.

On Friday, February 23rd from 1:05-1:30 we will hold a whole school read aloud event. The theme of our read alouds will be winter and the Olympic Games. Students will get to identify their top choices from a list of winter and Olympic topics prior to February 23rd, and then they will be grouped according to their interests. We will have the opportunity to not only learn new things, but also make new connections with other staff members and students.

School Drop Off

Please remember that students are not to be dropped off or picked up in the Leanne Lane parking lot. This larger lot is for staff parking and bus drop-off. Parents should drop-off. Parent should drop their son or daughter in the smaller lot off of Red Oak Trail.


We really appreciate the many parents who follow all of the traffic rules. Student safety is our main goal.

McFarland Cub Scout - Pinewood Derby

Dear families







McFarland Cub Scouts Pack 53 would like to invite your family to watch our Pinewood Derby on Saturday February, 3rd at the McFarland Lutheran Church. Derby starts at 8am and goes till 12:30pm. Come watch the Derby and learn more about Cub Scouts.

We will also have a cool Pit Stop Cafe that has food and snack for purchase, with all proceeds going the Pack 53.

So come and have fun cheering on our Scouts.
