Principal's Message
Monday of this past week was the middle school STEM Expo. Thank you to those of you that were able to make it. What I saw while walking around the cafeteria and looking at student posters was indicative of ISB middle schoolers. Students were laughing and joking, they were often wandering away from their posters, they were a little embarrassed about having their work seen by their friends, and there may have even been some lighthearted teasing going on. However, when I would ask a student to explain their project to me, and tell me what they learned, the student would undergo a transformation. All of a sudden I would find myself talking to an incredibly mature and articulate 6th, 7th, or 8th grader, who could explain experimental design, data analysis, and the larger science concepts that served as background for their question. It was clear as to just how serious they took their research. Our middle schoolers are exactly where they need to be: goofy, sometimes awkward, always playful, but also inquisitive, imaginative, and committed to their own learning.

Juniors or Seniors Interested in Choir or Band?
We are trying to offer the opportunity for our Grade 11 and Grade 12 students next year to continue with choir or band if they would like (in addition to the full IB Diploma course work). For Grade 11 students, band/choir would take the place of IB Seminar first semester. For Grade 12 students, band/choir would take the place of a late arrival period. If your student is interested, remind them to fill out the interest form in advisory on Wednesday, April 13.
8th Grade Community Project
This week in Advisory our 8th grade students began their MYP Community Project. This is a small-group service project that students choose based on their own interests and communities. With weekly lessons in Advisory to help guide them, the students decide on a project, design the project, and carry out the service in whatever form it takes. Please note: the project does not have to include direct, in-person volunteering. It is also important to know that while the planning of the project is supported by advisory lessons, any direct in-person projects need to be facilitated by parents and families. ISB cannot provide transportation and/or other logistical support for direct, in-person volunteering. We look forward to seeing what our students do this year!

Middle School Amazing Race Social - April 22nd
We are so excited to host our second middle school social of the year as we slowly but surely feel like things are getting back to normal! All Middle School students are invited to attend the Amazing Race social on April 22nd from 2:15 - 4:00 pm. Please arrange a pickup for your child promptly at 4:00 pm. Bussing is not available. The cost is $5 if you have an ASB sticker and $7 without an ASB sticker. There will also be pizza, popcorn, snow cones, and cotton candy available for purchase. ASB stickers can be purchased in the front office or through the online payment system. Tickets will be sold during lunch on Friday, April 22nd. All students also need a signed permission slip.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! In order to run a successful social, we will need about 25 parent volunteers. Please go to this link to sign up to help. Most volunteer spots are during the social; however, we will need three parents to help sell tickets at lunch from 10:30 - 11:45 am and one volunteer to pick up pizza the day of the event. Remember that volunteers are required to have a background check and have COVID vaccination. More information on how to do that can be found here.

Walking and Rolling is Good for the Earth!
April is the month we celebrate Earth Day and one way you can help our planet and combat climate change is to replace car trips with active ones! 2 miles of driving = 1.6 lbs of carbon emissions. Think about local car trips that your family takes often. Maybe it is a trip to the park or a friend’s house. Map your route and try walking or biking instead. We often think places are farther than they seem. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your location and be amazed at what your body can do for you!

April 2 - May 1, 2022 - Ramadan (Islam)
Ramadan, Arabic Ramaḍān, in Islam, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and the holy month of fasting. It begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent moon. Because the Muslim calendar year is shorter than the Gregorian calendar year, Ramadan begins 10–12 days earlier each year, allowing it to fall in every season throughout a 33-year cycle. Ramadan lasts from Saturday, April 2 to Sunday, May 1 in 2022. (Dates are dependent on the appearance of the crescent moon and may vary across countries.)
Islamic tradition states that it was during Ramadan, on the “Night of Power” (Laylat al-Qadr)—commemorated on one of the last 10 nights of Ramadan, usually the 27th night—that God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad the Qurʾān, Islam’s holy book, “as a guidance for the people.” For Muslims, Ramadan is a period of introspection, communal prayer (ṣalāt) in the mosque, and reading of the Qurʾān. God forgives the past sins of those who observe the holy month with fasting, prayer, and faithful intention.
