PROBLEM SOLVING/TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES
Students in grades 4-6 recently completed a team building/problem solving unit. During the unit the term "team" was defined. Students then completed challenges. Behaviors that occurred during the challenges were discussed and categorized as constructive (helpful) or destructive.
The Whole World NOT in your Hands
Students had to transport the 5' tall cage ball from one end of the gym to the other. During the transport students could not touch the ball with their hands or arms and all members of the team had to be in constant contact with the ball. Finally figured out a way to get them to use their heads!!
The Whole World NOT in your hands (continued)
Same challenge but different solution. The girls decided to put their backs into it!!
Railroad Tracks
Students must transport the cage ball from one end of the gym to the other. Students may not touch the ball with their hands or arms and the ball can not touch the floor. their solution had to incorporate the idea of "railroad tracks."
FLOAT R's - Touch the Sky
Using mini parachutes students had 2 challenges. The first challenge was to launch the float R shape (a shape made out of nylon which is extremely light) and make it touch the ceiling in the gym.
FLOAT R's - Toss & Catch
One group launches the Float R into the air and then runs out from under it. The other group runs in and must catch it on their parachute without the Float R touching any person. Pictured is the toss.
FLOAT R's - Toss & Catch (continued)
Pictured is the group moving in for the catch.
Knoodle
Each student in the group is given a pool noodle. The students form a circle. The student holds one end of his/her noodle and reaches into the circle with the other. Students will then grab the end of another students noodle with their free hand. The student must then untangle without letting go of the noodles.
Atomic Transfer
A disk with 10 strings attached is placed around post. A ball is placed on the top of the post. Students must use the strings to lift the disk and carry the ball from one post to the next.
Atomic Transfer (Continued)
While students are moving to the next post they must navigate around foam pins. When the students arrive at the second post they must lower the disk over the post and balance the ball on top of it.
BOUNCE BLAST
BOUNCE BLAST
A tire with a large exercise ball strapped to it is placed inside a 10 foot circle. Students are divided into 2 teams. One team throws red & orange balls and the other throws green & yellow ones.
BOUNCE BLAST (Continued)
The game is played in 1 minute rounds. One team is designated to start as throwers the other as catchers. To score the throwing team must throw the ball from outside the circle, hit the rebounder in the center, have the ball rebound outside the circle, and touch the floor.
BOUNCE BLAST (Continued)
To defend the other team will attempt to catch the balls before they hit the floor. If a ball is caught, that ball is removed from the game. At the end of 1 minute the 2 teams will switch roles.
