Literacy Library now has a Chapter Book Section!

In response to teacher feedback, the Literacy Library has a new AR-levelled chapter book section! The books, which range in AR levels from 1.8 to 6+, can be used for book clubs & literature circles or just to help students needing a particular type of reading...they are there to be used however you, the teachers, see fit. The books are housed in three bookcases denoted by colored bins (one bookcase to the right of the DRA readers and two across from the DRA readers). To check out, please take the entire bin (books and box - even if you need only one book...just hold on to the rest in your classroom) and place the checkout card in the envelopes behind the door just as you do with the DRA readers. Next time you are in the library, stop into the Literacy Library and take a look! Contact Leah Thomas with any questions.

Healthy Tips from our School Nurse

Greetings from Bertha Cavazos, RN, BS:

It is so good to be a part of the Doss team!

Just a reminder with flu season upon us, it is crucial we pratice good hand washing habits.

A couple of weeks ago, I placed a color copy of a hand washing poster in your boxes. Encourage students to wash their hands before eating and after using the restroom. A very good habit to develop is to use a paper towel to turn off the faucet. This procedure ensures clean hands remain clean after washing.

Later this month, the week of October 26, your Health Team will conducting scoliosis screenings for our 5th graders.

If a student enters your class late without a tardy pass, please send them to the office for a tardy slip or be sure to make them tardy. You may also send them back to the office to get a tardy slip to ensure appropriate documentation.

Also all parent notes must be a physical note with the parent signature on it. At this time, the district does not accept emails for parent notes for student absences.

It’s PTA Reflections Time — Let Your Imagination Fly!

Reflections is a National PTA program that encourages students to express themselves by giving positive recognition for their artistic efforts. After reflecting on the 2015-16 theme “Let Your Imagination Fly,” students may create and submit original works of art in ANY or ALL six categories:

- dance choreography

- film production

- literature

-musical composition

- photography

-visual arts

How can Doss teachers help?

1. Remember, this is a participation program…

2. Ask the children to “reflect” on the theme “Let Your Imagination Fly

3. Encourage children to create “original” works of art. (multiple entries are OK)

4. Make sure they complete and sign the required Student Entry Form and Artist Statement, which is heavily weighted in the judging rubric.

5. Have students turn in their entries on or before Tues., 10/27.

6. FYI: If an entry does not comply with the rules, yet deserves to advance, the Reflections Committee will work with the parent/student to make adjustments towards compliance.

Go to dosspta.org/reflections for more details. You may follow the link to the TexasPTA website to find the program rules and the 2014-15 gallery of winners, which includes 3 of our very own Doss Owls (Tom H (film/intermediate), Jaynie L (visual arts/intermediate), and Ashton K (music/ primary).

Let’s see if we can get a Doss Owl masterpiece all the way to Nationals!
