English Language Arts

ELA

We look forward to revisiting the poem, On the Same Day in March, while connecting it the informational text we read about weather and geography. After spring break, we'll also embark in a survival tale as the author recounts her own personal experiences in her book, Living Through a Natural Disaster. Students are applying context clues to grasp the rigorous vocabulary embedded within these mentor texts. They are also focusing on using key details to help summarize and paraphrase information. Students are actively engaged and involved in higher level conversations and discussions, showing a deeper level of both understanding and appreciation for a variety of texts. They sure shine!

Writing

Student authors will also discover how information can be used in a way to create a presentation, supporting a topic with facts, definitions and details. Through a close look at the scientific lens of weather, we’ll be able to connect our reading & writing lessons to our recent science unit, too! Students will be working to gain and share knowledge, resulting in their own weather news report. They’ll also practice this same form of speech/presentation writing as they create their own video news report to share at our spring conferences!

Math

We are thoroughly enjoying our geometry unit! Students are reveling in the hands-on learning as they are use various math manipulatives such as geoboards, tangrams and will even forming polygons out of toothpicks. They explored the various forms of quadrilaterals by creating anchor chart posters to share through a gallery walk, displaying their mathematical knowledge with others! This week, they’ll explore the attributes of a progression of polygons: rectangles and rhombuses, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons and dodecagons. This week we will also collect and formulate data, based on geometric terms! Gee-we love geometry!

Opportunity Knocks

Opportunity Knocks (extra learning opportunities) are a hit! Kudos to the kiddos that opted to take part in this optional opportunity! Please remember that these activities are completely OPTIONAL. Students can access these opportunities on our Reach for the Stars Google Site!

Students who complete THREE opportunity knocks activities by Friday, will have the chance to enter my class prize bin! If your child is looking for something fun to do this weekend, these just may be the answer you're looking for!
