From the Principal
Congratulations to our remarkable Monroe High School class of 2021! Today symbolizes what the last 12 years is all about … getting you across the graduation finish line with the tools in your tool belt that you will need to take your next steps. Whatever those next steps are, we are 100% confident that you are ready and that you will succeed. The greatest gift you can give us is that you do. As we all wrestle with the competing emotions of being excited and proud, yet at the same time not quite sure that we are ready to let you go … remember that life will always be full of tension and competing emotions as you travel on your journey. What matters most is that you keep your eyes on the road ahead of you. Briefly glance back to learn and to celebrate, but mostly look ahead to where you are going, anticipating and planning for what the journey forward may bring.
Finally, never forget that you survived a world-wide pandemic, likely the most challenging year you will ever face. Because of that, you are ready for any adversity that may come your way. We are so proud of you, graduating class of 2021. Even though for most of the year it’s been over zoom, it’s been an honor to serve as your principal this year. Good luck, go make us proud, and remember you will always be a Bearcat!

Summer Fun!!
Prevention for Parents
Substance-Free Summer Fun
School's out, COVID restrictions are easing up, and it's been about a year since our young people have shut their screens for an extended period of time.
This is all great news and I think most of us are excited for our kids to have a break, but they still need some guidance and prevention efforts during the summer months!
With more free time, less supervision, and time with peers, substances may make their way into the mix of summer activities. What can you do to support a substance free summer?
Here are some tips:
- Set expectations around substance use
- Know where your teen is, who they are with, and what activities they're doing
- Promote healthy coping skills like walking, mindful breathing, being outside, etc.
- Role model healthy behaviors
- Talk with your teen about how to get out of a situation where substances are present
- Provide or encourage positive, substance-free activities like exercising, family time, getting a job, volunteering, creative projects, or whatever it is they enjoy doing!
- Provide support if they need help with substance use
Mental Health Support Over Summer Break
Our school district counseling office staff will be out of the office for summer break, but there are many community supports available if your child needs help over the summer. It has been a difficult year, so please seek help when you or your family need it.

Opportunities in the Monroe School District
Youth Transition Summer Workshop
Summer Opportunity for youth with disabilities
The FREE Youth Transition Summer Workshop is for youth with all disabilities who are planning to live independently someday and have career or educational goals. Youth who have or had a 504 plan or IEP are encouraged to apply. The ages we work with are 16-24 years old. Individuals interested must call to request an application. Once we receive the completed application they will be contacted for an interview.
This year, the workshop will be held through Zoom for social distancing purposes. The workshop focuses on preparing for college and employment, and developing independent living skills including self-advocacy, financial management, etc. We will also have motivational and guest speakers. This is a great opportunity for youth to get connected with community resources and meet other youth with disabilities who plan to live independently. Youth that complete the workshop will receive an award and an invitation to a special outing at a later time. For more information, or to request an application, please contact our Youth Transition Program Manager, Margaret Tangedahl by email at margarett@cfinorth.org or by phone at 360-393-3890 ext. 202 or our Youth Transition Coordinator, Anna Ihrig by email at annai@cfisouth,org or by phone at 253-582-1253 ext. 109.

Free Meal Program Update
FREE MEALS CONTINUE FOR ALL STUDENTS
Did you know we are still offering FREE meals for all students, even when they are attending in-person?!
Meals for students in grades 6-12 are a combination of in school service and take-home meals. On the days they attend in-person, students are offered a free sack lunch to be eaten at school. They also have an opportunity to receive free take-home meals at the end of their day, which includes breakfasts and lunches for the days that they will be remote learning.
We know that children learn better when they have had a meal. Please encourage your student to take advantage of the free meals both in school and take-home! We will continue offering free meals through the rest of this school year!
