Estimadas familias de James John,

Qué unos dias que hemos tenido en Portland, no?! Esperamos que todos estén seguros y que el clima nos permita regresar a la escuela el lunes. También esperamos que haya estado recibiendo actualizaciones de PPS y háganos saber si necesita ayuda para recibir comunicaciones del distrito.

Nuestros estudiantes estaban muy emocionados por el fin de escuela el miércoles y espero que todos estén disfrutando de la increíble nevada. Como se mencionó anteriormente esta semana, tuvimos que posponer nuestra celebración anual del Mes de la Historia Afroamericana. Esperamos reprogramar nuestra celebración para el próximo miercoles 1 de marzo. Próximamente habrá más información. Nuestra celebración todavía se llevará a cabo por la noche y esperamos verlos a todos.

La próxima semana verá el comienzo de muchos eventos emocionantes. El miércoles, Comienza el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer y el Mes de la Concientización sobre las Discapacidades. También esta semana nos tenemos dia de Pelo Loco, nuestra Hora De Café con nuestros Padres Latinos, una visita del autor Rachel Ignotofky y terminamos la próxima semana con nuestros estudiantes participando en nuestro Día de compañeros en el aula de toda la escuela.

Dear James John Families,

What a few days we have had in Portland, no?! We hope you are all safe and we are hopeful the weather will allow us to return to school on Monday. We also hope you have been receiving updates from PPS and please let us know if you need assistance in receiving district communications.

Students were quite excited leaving our hallways Wednesday afternoon and I hope all of you are enjoying the amazing snowfall. As mentioned earlier this week, we had to postpone our annual Black History Month celebration due to the snowfall. We have rescheduled our celebration for next Wednesday, March 1. Our celebration will still be held in the evening and we hope to see all of you.

This coming week sees many exciting events beginning. On Wednesday, Women's History Month and Disabilities Awareness Month begins. Also this week on Friday we have Crazy Hair Day, our Hora De Café with our Padres Latinos, an author visit with Rachel Ignotofky and we finish next week with our students participating in our Schoolwide Classroom Buddy Day.

Our Successful School Survey ends Wednesday, February 28th. Please take some time this weekend to finish the survey. Your thoughts are important to us and give our school community vital information about your child’s experience at our school, as well as allowing families voice, to share views about our district's educational systems.

In spite of the snow, some James John staff were able to attend the National Association of Bilingual Education (NABE) conference held in Portland this past Thursday and Friday.

Dr. Melvin, Denesyn Figueroa (Literacy Intervention Specialist and Coach) and Kate Rodriguez (1st Grade DLI Teacher) made it to the conference and were able to attend some very inspiring and informative sessions. NABE's (https://nabe.org/) mission is to advocate for educational equity and excellence for bilingual/multilingual students in a global society. It was inspiring to hear from the US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, who himself is a multi-lingual "English Learner" and many other educational leaders. Attending this conference strengthened our vision to support our multi-language learners and equitable outcomes for all students at James John.

A pesar de la nieve, algunos miembros del personal de James John pudieron asistir a la conferencia de la Asociación Nacional de Educación Bilingüe (NABE) celebrada en Portland el pasado jueves y viernes.

Dr. Melvin, Denesyn Figueroa (Especialista en Intervención de Alfabetización y Entrenadora) y Kate Rodríguez (Maestra de DLI de 1er Grado) asistieron a la conferencia y pudieron asistir a algunas sesiones muy inspiradoras e informativas. de NABE (https://nabe.org/) tiene como misión abogar por la equidad y la excelencia educativas para los estudiantes bilingües/plurilingües en una sociedad global. Fue inspirador escuchar al Secretario de Educación de los Estados Unidos, Miguel Cardona, quien es un "aprendiz de inglés" multilingüe y muchos otros líderes educativos. As you all are aware, our Black History Month Celebration was postponed to a further date this coming week. We anticipate a large turn out for the evening and would like to use this opportunity to get feedback from families.

If you are interested in interviewing families, we are looking for 4 or 5 teachers. The survey would be three questions and would be 15 to 25 minutes of your time from 5:30 - 6:30pm during the night of the event.
