This Week
It has been a fantastic week here at GATE!
This week the teachers started a book study with me for the book Emotional Intensity in Gifted Students by Christine Fonseca. I'm very excited for our journey through this book and how we can use it to help and guide our students. Once our book study is done in May, copies will be available to borrow is any parents are interested in reading it.
This week the students also took the NWEA MAP test. Official score reports will be sent home in a few weeks, but teachers will be able to use the information now. We are always trying to find ways to ensure your child is growing here at GATE!
Don't forget that we have Monday, January 20th off to observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Please enjoy this week's newsletter, and I'll see you TODAY from 3-6 at the Blanket Making Event!
Sincerely,
Kate Martin, Principal

IMPORTANT - Coaching Opportunity - 5th Grade Basketball
Details regarding the league and expectations are listed below.
- There is no size limit on teams which can be co-ed. Any 5th grade child can participate unless behavior or grades are an issue.
- There will be a fee for each child which will pay for the players shirts.
- There is no stipend this year for coaches of the league. We will be looking into stipends for the 2020-21 season for coaches.
- This year we will be looking at 5 periods (instead of 4 quarters) for each game. The reason for 5 periods is to allow all kids to play and also taking into consideration large vs. small teams.
- Practices will start in February for the competition. The gym will be reserved after school on the days of practice (usually 2 days per week).
- All games will be at the High School in the Fieldhouse. Two games will be played at the same time. All games will start at 6PM and be completed no later than 7:15PM. The last date will be a 6pm start time and 7:15 pm start time.
- Games will be played using the regulation size court in the Fieldhouse.
- The last date will have teams of comparable skills play each other.
*A mandatory coaches meeting will be held on January 22, 2020 in the Board Room at the Administration building. All rules and information will be provided to coaches.
Dates of Competition for this year will be:

Bringing P2 Home
This week's P2 character trait was prudence.
You plan for the future and achieve your goals by making careful everyday choices. Prudence is the ability to do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason. It's a future-oriented way of thinking that helps a person set goals, make plans, and have the discipline to accomplish them. Prudence supports effective individual self-management. Whether aspiring for an academic grade or for an athletic record, foresight and planning are necessary. However, long-term goals, even with a plan, can only be obtained by overcoming your impulses and desires that steer you away from your goals.
"A goal without a plan is just a wish." -Antoine de Saint-Exupery

What does Avondale Offer After 8th Grade?
This spring I plan to have the AHS counselors come present to our GATE families to fully explain all of these opportunities. This will be a weeknight event - I will communicate it in advance so you can plan to come see all that we have to offer after GATE. Until then, please feel free to access this document and start learning!
