Unami United
November 18, 2016
Dear Unami Parents, Guardians & Students,
It is hard to believe that the holidays are already upon us! This week will be a very short one with our student break beginning with an early dismissal on Tuesday (10:45 AM).
Our Unami United culture will be evident in the many team activities planned for Tuesday morning, concluding with our first school-wide assembly at 9:45 AM. Our student council leaders have been busy planning for the event and are so excited to lead their peers in a fun-filled school-wide celebration!
I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends,
Unami United,
Mrs. Lang
Principal
THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE
WATER BOTTLES IN CLASSROOMS
We believe it is very important that students have the opportunity to hydrate throughout the day, and this year installed several filtered water stations for this purpose. However, the small plastic water bottles, combined with the current trend, are an increasing distraction to instruction.
Moving forward, students will still be permitted to bring traditional refillable water bottles to their classes. However, they will not be allowed to bring the disposable plastic water bottles to classes. Homeroom teachers will be sharing this expectation with students beginning next Monday. We appreciate your support.
INSTRUCTIONAL SPOTLIGHTS
This year, along with our newsletter, we will be "tweeting" out photos and 144 character descriptions of all the fabulous happenings in our community. You can easily filter these "tweets" by using the district's new CB Mobile App.
English ROCKS

Spanish 1 Students Showed Off Their Fancy Footwork!
On Wednesday, November 16, Spanish 1 students took a field trip to La Luna dance studio in Falls Township. The trip involved cultural and language enrichment to support learning occurring in Spanish 1 classrooms. The trip began with some trivia about various Latin America/Spanish dances - salsa, tango, paso doble, etc. Students were then treated to a dance exhibition, executed by 2 of La Luna's professional dancers. Thereafter, the students became the dancers, as the professionals guided them through a comprehensive lesson. Although tentative at first, students quickly "found their footing" and showed off some pretty impressive skills. The dancing culminated with partner dancing, including a spin move! The trip was capped off with an authentic Latin American/Spanish meal, including black beans, rice, and chicken - YUM! Students seemed to truly enjoy the experience.
Special thanks to Ms. DeRosa, Ms. Field, and Ms. Mendoza for organizing such a wonderful event!
If your child attended, ask them to show of some of their newly acquired dance skills!
Students in ninth grade art classes took a field trip to Center City Philadelphia, walking from the Kimmel Center, down the Ave. of the Arts to the P.M.A. Craft Show at the Convention center, with a lunch stop at Reading Terminal Market!
"God bless us, everyone!" ...Tiny Tim, "A Christmas Carol"
The 7th grade class (Team Gneiss and Team Granite) will be attending a live production of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol on Monday, December 19th or Tuesday, December 20th. Your child will be told by his ELA teacher which day he/she will attend. We’ll be visiting the Hedgerow Theater in Media, PA where we’ll see this tale brought to life “in the round.” We will depart Unami Middle School at 10 a.m. and will return by 2:15 p.m., enabling all students to take their normal busses home. Students should bring a bagged lunch to be eaten before the trip, plus an afternoon snack to be eaten afterwards.
Please complete the “My Payments Plus” form mypaymentsplus to grant your child permission to attend and remit $21.00 to cover the cost of the ticket and the bus ride

UNAMI TROWEL AND PLOW - 2016
Unami's Trowel and Plow Service Club had another tremendous year of service learning. Here is an excerpt from their fall newsletter, written by club founder, Dr. Jim Massey.
The fall harvest was collected. The first frost ended the growing season, only leaving behind our root vegetables to finish strong. Thanksgiving is just around the corner. It is time that we pause and reflect upon the work of the Unami Trowel and Plow. Just over four years ago a small group of individuals including, a social studies, Science, Math, Learning Support, and Physical Education teacher, along with the school nurse committed themselves to growing and developing community at Unami. The goal of this community was to bring students, teachers, and other community members together to create a vegetable garden. The hope was and still is that the garden would foster true service learning opportunities. success, yet again.
In our fourth season we were able to raise and donate over 235 pounds of fresh vegetables to the New Britain Food Pantry at the New Britain Baptist Church. The produce included eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, banana peppers, green peppers, cucumbers, carrots, beets, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, and broccoli.
We have a lot to be thankful for! The only reason we could donate so much is due to the incredible support from our students, their families, our teachers, and our custodial staff.
STUDENT COUNCIL UPDATE
Next week, Student Council will be running this year's first school-wide assembly (with the help of teachers and administration). Our Unami United Assembly will celebrate the winner of the t-shirt deign contest (Luc T.), showcase the talented jazz band and choir, and feature a special performance of our National Anthem by Madison Y. It will also include a friendly teacher-student competition as we attempt to prove which Unami-goer is the best at water bottle flipping of all, an appropriate setting for this competition!
UNAMI SPORTS
The Varsity football team earned its way to the championship game by defeating Richboro 14-6. Jason C. scored two touchdowns for the Warriors off a pass from Luke S. and a kick-return. Owen P. scored the two point conversion. Ryan S. and Vaughn H. both had long runs while Colin P. and Aaron W. played great on the defensive line. The Warriors will play in the championship game Monday v. Lenape.
