Mrs. Amy Jacques
Mrs. Kim Gioia
Ms. Lisa Mooney
6th Grade Happenings...
Most 6th grade students have completed writing their student success plans, using Naviance. The school counselors split each team up and presented a lesson called "Looking Forward" (it is in their google drive) teaching students the importance of setting goals and writing action steps for each goal. They set two academic goals and one personal/social goal and wrote action plans to assist them in achieving these goals. There are quite a few students that need to complete this task, Mrs. Jacques will catch each student up. Hopefully by October 30th everyone will be set with goals.
In November the counselors will split the teams up again and present workshops on "Becoming an Organized Student" and in "Time Management." In December they will take a Learning Style Preference assessment, and begin to understand what they can put in place when they are studying and doing homework that will help them with their academic success.

7th Grade Happenings...
7th grade students hit the ground running when they started the 2015-2016 school year. As the long term sub for Mrs. Severino, Mrs Gioia wasted no time introducing herself to students both in and out of the classroom and insured their transition from 6th to 7th grade was seamless.
Revisiting Student Success Plans was first on Mrs. Gioia’s agenda. Students in 7th grade were asked to think of both academic and personal goals for the year and to write an action plan that would help them realistically attain their goals. Parents, ask your child what S.M.A.R.T. goals are and have them share their student success plan with you. You can access their plan through Naviance.
To keep the momentum going, MS School Counselors also kicked off “Student Success Week ” to celebrate college and career readiness. Some of the planned activities included writing thank you notes to the people who have inspired and helped us with our success; “Future Friday,” was an opportunity for students and staff to wear either their favorite college attire OR to dress up in career clothes of their choice.
School counselors are preparing to teach the Internet Awareness Developmental Guidance Lesson in November. Your 7th grader will learn the meaning of self identity, respect for oneself and how to avoid online predators, to name a few.
7th graders are off to a great start! To learn more about what’s happening in the school counseling department and 7th grade, follow Mrs. Gioia on twitter @kimgioianf!
8th Grade Happenings...
8th grade is off to a great start this year! Ms. Mooney has been checking in with 8th graders and helping them to get organized. She has also started meeting with her girls’ and boys’ lunch groups.
Most of the 8th graders have completed their student success plans and cluster finder surveys. Ms. Mooney is now working on Naviance/SSP makeup groups for those students that were absent when we started working on these surveys. 8th grade students’ can also finish working on these questions at home as well, connection.naviance.com/nfms . Students know their username and password. Ms. Mooney will revisit each 8th grader's goals and have them take a learning style preference assessment to continue her work in getting them ready for high school.
Ellis Clark AgriScience Technical High School and Henry Abbott Technical High School came in to give presentations to the entire 8th grade. Any students' interested in either school can pick up an application in Ms. Mooney's office. Their open houses and application dates are posted on Ms. Mooney's website.
