News from Manchester Memorial Elementary School!

January 15, 2016

Principal's Note...

Our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is an incredibly supportive group of mothers and fathers who support the educational goals of our school. They work together to organize fundraisers and community events to help make our school the best that it can be. The resources that they provide to our staff are very valuable, and we appreciate them tremendously.

Mark your calendars for Thursday (1-28-16) @8:30 am, when all MMES families are invited to the monthly PTO meeting to see what this group is all about. It is a great way to meet new parents in Manchester while supporting the goals of your child's school. We are hoping to see all of you there!

Have a great weekend (Go Pats)!

-John

Japan Project Update

MMES returned from winter break to a delivery from our sister school (Shimazu School in Kyotango City, Japan)! The children from the school sent us a box containing artwork, photographs, letters, and artifacts from their town. On Wednesday this week, a group of representatives from the Japan Society of Boston came to MMES for a visit. Some of our Student Ambassadors designed and led a tour of our school. After the tour, some of our teachers met with our guests to explore the box and have items in it explained/translated.

One of the things they showed us is a Japanese website (I believe it is from a museum in the area of Shimazu School) that highlights the package we sent them and the one they sent us. Check out the link below (scroll down on the website past the pictures of Ambassador Kennedy on the beach). http://www.nakisuna.jp/2015/12/

Survey...shooting for 100% parent participation!

Can you help us???

Every year, the School Improvement Council crafts a school improvement plan. The plan is comprised of goal areas and action steps that help guide overall improvement at our school. This process is informed by our staff, parent, and community representatives along with input from all of you. Would you be so kind as to take a few moments out of your day to respond to the survey below? It would be great if all parents completed the survey from their perspective to help us guide the development of our plan. It will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to let us know what we are doing well and where we should focus our attention in the coming years!

Announcements from our Friends

PTO Enrichment: African Dance

African Dance, a FREE after school program funded by the PTO, is back by popular demand! This year there are 30 spots for kids in grades 1-4. As some of you may remember, it's an African Dance class that lasts for nine weeks beginning Monday, 2/29 and ending 5/2. The class is on Mondays, directly after school, from 3-4 in the gym. At the end of the session (early May), participants will perform for the whole school alongside the professor Greg Coles (he's really a professor - teaches at Tufts/Salem State and trained with Alvin Ailey). The class is a really unique opportunity for our kids to learn about African history and culture through music and dance, and will appeal to both boys and girls. There's a lot of loud drumming :)

More info. on Greg Coles: http://www.gregcolesdanceanddrum.com/

Link to register: https://www.activityreg.com/clientpage_t1.wcs (click on register, then programs and activities, then 2016 winter programs).

Please note, the class holds 30 students.

There is a $12 registration fee, but the class itself is free.

PTO: Tapes for Education

Do you ever shop at Crosby's? We sure do! Please join us, as Manchester Memorial once again participates in the "Tapes for Education" program with Crosby's Market! Simply bring or send your Crosby's register receipts in to school. There is a red Crosby's bin by the office. The PTO will collect and submit them for FREE equipment, such as computers, printers, AV and athletic equipment, for Memorial School. Thank you for participating in this great, easy program!
