Mathematical Practices Posters with child friendly language!
The Mathematical Practice Standards are the HABITS OF MIND that we want to develop in our students. Why not share them with your students? Here are two sites that list the Mathematical Practices in child friendly ways.
Just click on the Mathematical Practice and scroll down to the grade level poster you'd like to print. The wording starts out simple for K-1 and then gets more sophisticated for higher grade levels.

The Mathematical Practice Standards
The 8 Mathematical Practice Standards are the mathematical processes and proficiencies that we are being asked to develop in our students. They are the standards that guide our teaching practice.
"These Standards are not intended to be new names for old ways of doing business. They are a call to take the next step." (taken from the CCSSM document)
C-P-A
Research shows that the most effective sequence to teach new mathematical content is through a Concrete to Pictorial to Abstract (C-P-A) approach. This approach is based on the work of Jerome Bruner. Through this approach students are making meaning of mathematics rather than regurgitating it. It will foster a deeper conceptual understanding of the mathematics. Studies have shown that "students who use concrete materials develop more precise and more comprehensive mental representation and on-task behavior, understand mathematical ideas, and better apply these to life situations." (Hauser).
It is important for students to make the connection between the concrete to pictorial and the pictorial to the abstract. You can facilitate this connection by having students articulate the connection and their thinking. MP#3
