Bullying – “Sticks and Stones”
It turns out that words actually can hurt you. In a recent study in Psychology Today, scientists found that verbal bullying – the common taunts and ridicule of schoolyards – actually inflicts lasting physical effects on the brain’s structure. In those victims, brain scans show a deficit of connecting fibers across the brains. Meanwhile, victims also report greater anxiety, depression, and drug abuse.
If your child is the victim of bullying, please let us help. Report any issues to a teacher or myself.

Calvin Grote
8th-grade student Calvin Grote and his family recently traveled to Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah to attempt to break the land speed record on a 1.5 mile salt race track. The 1932 Ford Roadster was designed and made from scratch by a friend of the family. Calvin has been part of the Land Speed Racing Team pit crew since “he was just a little kid.” The team had expectations of the Ford Roadster reaching 150 mph during Speed Week, which attracts several hundred drivers that compete in a range of categories on a number of salt tracks. Unfortunately, the race was cancelled due to recent rains. Regardless, you are a winner at SLS Calvin Grote!

Yearbook Committee 2019-2020
Yearbook Committee 2019-2020 is here!
This year's yearbook is going to be a first for St. Louis, due to the fact that it will be completed by our very own 7th and 8th grade members!! Yes this is correct, these 20 students on the committee are responsible for putting together the yearbook for the 2019-2020 school year. We have a strong group working together and delegating tasks to each person's particular strengths. The committee has already started working with our first meeting back in May. I am very excited for them. The finished product is always very rewarding. The students really make it all worth it. Let us all pray for these students to succeed in making this year’s yearbook one of the best St. Louis School has seen!

St. Louis 5th grade
In science the fifth graders have been observing the plants and animals at St. Louis School's garden. Then they have used their observations to ask questions and make hypotheses. Below is a picture of one fifth grader, who was dissecting a zinnia.
Mrs. Emsweller did a great job with the school garden this past summer, and it produced lots of beautiful flowers for us to enjoy!
Important "FACTS" Grant & Aid Documentation Changes
SLS Parents,
In an effort to streamline the awarding process, FACTS has made the decision to discontinue the ability for families to fax or mail supporting documentation, in favor of requiring documentation to be uploaded as part of the online application process. This change will be effective for the 2020-2021 application year, which begins September 3, 2019.
During the 2018-2019 school year, 96.6% of all required documentation was uploaded directly through FACTS Grant & Aid. It is believed that eliminating the acceptance of paper documentation will increase efficiencies for both families and schools, as it will erase the additional wait time associated with mailing and scanning documents upon receipt.
Should you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact your FACTS customer service representative at 866-441-4637. You may also contact Tina Weber (tweber@st.louisschool.org) or Scott Weekley (sweekley@st.louisschool.org) in the Parish Office (812-934-3204). Thank you.

Breakfast Program
What’s Cooking?
At school, there’s always a meal ready to be served!
Some mornings, it’s tough to find the time to make sure your kids are eating a nutritious breakfast. On those days, why not send them to the School Breakfast Program? Each meal meets government nutritional guidelines and standards. Schools are required to provide a breakfast meal that includes fruit, whole-grain rich items, and low fat or fat free milk. Check your child’s menu to see the variety of nutritious choices available at School Breakfast, or stop by to sample the food yourself!
