May 29: Forging a Path Forwards, a Lesson for All of Us.
Dear Parents/Caregiver, Students and Staff:
Happy Friday! Happy last day of school for 2020 and what a celebration we should have, within social distance guidelines, of course. Your hard work and determination have brought you successfully to the finish line. (Do a happy dance here). I once again thank you for quickly changing gears and moving your education into a new format this year...and doing it so well.
As we close out this school year, we have already turned our attention to the 20-21 school year. I want to know that we are placing additional focus on summer learning opportunities to help bridge any gaps that may have occurred for our students due to the Covid-19 school closure. There is some information below relative to Math and ELA opportunities. Please monitor our website for additional offerings and resources as they are added throughout the summer to assist you and your child.
Our Advance Team has been working for many weeks on different scenarios that could be part of what instruction looks like when school opens for students on August 18th. I want you to know some of our thoughts as we forge a path forward, given a rapidly changing environment and keeping in mind that systems put in place must be easily responsive to change.
We are reviewing what we have learned during the Covid-10 disruption, what is possible given the resources we have or resources we can put into place, and of course a review of what we know. A return to school post-Covid closure will require responsiveness, agility and waves of decision making as new information comes forward. We recognize that not all decisions made will find favor with all families but using the following framework, the BCS team will be guided toward prioritization and focus to offer an instructional plan that prepares all students for future success by examining the following:
- identifying knowns and unknowns,
- building scenarios,
- recognizing consistencies with prioritization,
- communicate, communicate, communicate.
While this week marked the end of instruction for the school year, our graduates marked the end of the school year. All of us, whether moving on to a new grade level, employment, the military or college must forge a path forward, and this requires planning, organization and communication. I want you to know that our communication flow to you may ease from what you have received in the past 10 weeks but please watch your inbox for updates from us as we may be seeking your input or ready to share updates. Also, if you or your student are experiencing any challenges, please ask for help. To forge a path forward, we must work together as a team because what is at stake is the education of our children, and we all have a role in that success.
Enjoy your summer.
Be well, stay safe.
Dr. Patrick K. Murphy, Superintendent of Schools
