Imagine Charter at North Lauderdale
March 2020 Newsletter
Principal Message
Last month we had many celebrations that gave our students reminders of the Other People Matter mindset. We celebrated our friends, learned about past and present significant African Americans, and lent our support for others. As usual, our students rose to the occasion with the help and support of our parents and staff members. As we continue to build on this knowledge roaring into the month of March. We hope that you enjoyed all of our activities from last month and are looking forward to what is ahead.
Sincerely,
Ms. Bailey
Life Skills Training
Our 4th and 5th grade students have been taking part in the Memorial Healthcare System-Community Youth Service (MHS-CYS) Substance Abuse Prevention Program: Life Skills Training. This program takes place during P.E specials for 8-9 weeks. Life Skills Training focuses on developing and supporting a positive orientation to enable youth to achieve their future goals. The students work towards decreasing a negative self-image while enhancing their own skills to prepare them for a positive future in a non-judgmental manner. The program also enhances student’s self-esteem and ability to utilize effective refusal skills in “real-world” situations in order to reduce the likelihood of future substance abuse experimentation.
Grades K - 4 also had an assembly on Child Abuse hosted by Nancy J. Cotterman Center. The assembly educated students on safety procedures and how to identifying safe adults.
Kindergartners at the Petting Zoo
Last month, our Kindergartners invited the petting zoo to our campus. Students were able to interact with zoo animals and learned how to take care and feed them. As you can see, they were highly engaged.
Physical Education & Jump Rope for Heart
For the month of February, were are focused on personal fitness and heart health in Physical Education class. The fitness test, known as the Fitnessgram, was used to test our students in several areas of fitness which includes: cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, muscular endurance, and muscular strength. Each student worked to reach personal goals that were determined by their age and gender using a chart provider. While comparing their results to the chart, students were able to determine their lowest and greatest levels of fitness. Students are now creating SMART goals as they work to improve their fitness levels. Students will be tested again at the end of the school year.
While we prepared for Jump Rope for Heart, students began their unit on heart health. Students learned how the heart works and important lifestyle choices to help keep their hearts healthy and strong. Look out for Fun Heart Facts that are posted throughout our campus.
The students were also motivated by an assembly for Jump Rope for Heart. They were pumped up by Ms. Burns our Heart Superhero and excited to learn what they can do to help with heart disease.
Day of Love and Friendship
On Valentines Day, our students participated in a Day of Love and Friendship. They shared cards and sweets with their peers showing their support of one another. As you can see, our students are filled with lots of caring energy.
Black History Month
Our students and staff participated in many activities to celebrate the African American culture. We dressed down, learned and celebrated many African Americans that made this celebration significant. Our teachers found many creative ways to not only showcase their talents but to also share information with our students. After creating projects, innovating doors and bulletin boards, we ended the month on a high note of our students sharing their knowledge in spoken word, dance and song. It was a fantastic end to a very full month.
Imagine That Showcase
This year, for our Imagine That Showcase, our school was once again challenged to come up with projects that showed connections to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM). They were also challenged to come up with projects that will help benefit others. Our campus was very creative and their projects were magnificent. We collected for the homeless, created first aide kits, collected teddy bears for sick children, and learned about Sickle Cell Anemia. Learning about Sickle Cell Anemia helped to create a day of awareness on our campus. We wore red and raised money for the cause.
