A Note From Principal Graham
January 2020 has begun and we are working hard to achieve our goals. With all the talk of resolutions, it makes us reflect upon Habit 2 that teaches us to "Begin with the End in Mind". Taking a moment and creating a mental picture of a goal and achieving it. Think about how good it feels when you do something well. It is so special to see that look in a child's eyes when they do something they are proud of. For instance, writing their name for the first time, reading their first chapter book, running a mile, memorizing their 9 facts, or riding a bike.
Take a moment and talk to your child about what goals they are making for school and home. How can we support them to feel that success? What does their progress look like? Don't forget to model to your child how you use Habit 2 by planning ahead and making goals.
Family Parent Workshop - Internet Safety
January 16
6:00-7:00 pm
Families and students are welcome to attend and learn how to keep your children safe on the internet. OGE welcomes James Deal from the S.C. Department of Education who will provide helpful information including tips to use at home to keep your children safe while using the internet, the many avenues of social media and apps that kids are drawn too. He will tell which apps are safe and which apps to steer clear of and why. This evening will primarily benefit students in grades 2-5, but families of all grades are welcome to attend.
Attendance
Attendance matters! Studies show that school attendance is linked to school achievement. Please make sure that your child is here and is on time.
To help your child want to come to school:
Show interest in what your child is doing in school. Let them know you are excited about what they are learning. Ask questions about their school day!
Let them know you have the expectation that they will go to school every day unless they are sick.
Schedule appointments for after school hours.
Stick to a good bedtime routine so that your child is getting enough rest. Pack lunches and book bags the night before to help with morning routines.
Make sure that if your child is absent, you send in a medical excuse or parent note the next day. Good habits begin early. The most important school habit is regular attendance!
Family Engagement
Family engagement in education is a game changer. Why? Research shows that parents/guardians are one of the biggest influences on their children’s success! Make family time fun! Here are a few STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities that are fun for the entire family to do:
Cook Together! Choose a recipe with your child based on foods they like to eat. Involve them in the entire shopping, preparation, and cooking process. Pay attention to measuring how much of each ingredient is needed. Use words such as fraction, portion, and temperature.
Make Paper Airplanes! Take a piece of paper and fold a simple paper airplane. Have each family member make an airplane and fly it. Now add tape and a paperclip to the airplane. Observe if anything changes. Move the clip to different spots on the airplane. How does this change flight? Who can make an airplane fly the furthest? Why did that plane fly further?
Make sure you ask your student what they are doing in STEM lab with Mrs. Harmon each week!
Helping Those in Need
Students created care packages for Epworth children's home recently. PreK students decorated ornaments, first grade students made holiday cards, second grade made friendship bracelets, third grade students made tic tac toe boards, fourth grade made stress balls and fifth grade students did a great job decorating the packages. Students learned a great lesson in giving their TIME and TALENT to create a TREASURE for someone in need.
Thank You
