Table Talk

The information in this newsletter is designed to help with daily conversations with your child. It will let you know what your child/children will be learning in school. It also includes any updates and reminders.


Unit 3

Theme: Live and Learn

Essential Question: How do the interactions we have with the people, places, and things in our world affect us?

This wee we will be focusing on how a character responds to a major event/challenge in the story. We will then identify how a character changes from the beginning of the story to the end of the story.


Have your child choose a book from their guided reading independent level. This was given to you at conference time. Updates will be sent out after the next guided reading assessment. Then have your child read independently for at least 20 minutes. Finally have your child retell what they have read using transition words. If the book is a nonfiction he/she can tell you important facts they learned.



Long o sound spelled o, oa, ow, and oe. We will use this sound and spellings in order to read, write, and spell words.


Each night have your child choose one of the activities from the spelling menu. Your child/children may create a different activity to practice their words. Please remember to sign their spelling homework each night.


The spelling test will consist of 5 words and 3 high frequency words from this week's list. It will also include 2 words from previous skills. The students will then choose one word and use it in a meaningful sentence. This sentence will be graded for CAPSS.


Now that we have practiced the writing process (Brainstorming, Drafting, Revising, Editing, Publishing) the students will complete a personal narrative independently.

Content (Science)

This Week:

We are going to complete the Space Odyssey Unit by taking an assessment. We will also design and create a diorama about a topic from the unit.

January Birthday Celebration

Our December birthday celebration will be this Thursday, January 7th (3:00-3:30). Parents are welcome to come celebrate. If your child would like to bring in something to share with the class, we are requesting indoor/outdoor recess equipment, books, crafts, etc.

Ms. Patrick

Next Wednesday, December 9th will be her last day of her part time internship. She will be returning to our classroom on January 25th for her full time placement.

I have purchased Ms. Patrick a WTES t-shirt and will have the students make her a card. We are going to keep it small as she will be returning. We will plan something more elaborate for the completion of her full time rotation.


Just a reminder that we have Library each Tuesday. Please remember to have your child/children to bring in their book(s) to renew or return for new ones.

In Need of...

Our classroom is need of several items. If you would like to donate them we would greatly appreciate it.
