Poem

You love us when we're heroes, home on leave,

Or wounded in a mentionable place.

You worship decorations; you believe

That chivalry redeems the war's disgrace.

You make us shells. You listen with delight,

By tales of dirt and danger fondly thrilled.

You crown our distant ardours while we fight,

And mourn our laurelled memories when we're killed.

You can't believe that British troops “retire”

When hell's last horror breaks them, and they run,

Trampling the terrible corpses—blind with blood.

O German mother dreaming by the fire,

While you are knitting socks to send your son

His face is trodden deeper in the mud.

Annoted Poem (annotiations in bold)

You love us when we're heroes, home on leave, (The mothers love their sons when they are home.)

Or wounded in a mentionable place. (wounded in a hospital)

You worship decorations; you believe (The higher ranked you are the more decorations you get. The higher ranked you are the prouder everyone is.)

That chivalry redeems the war's disgrace. (You believe it’s a mans duty to go to war and die.)

You make us shells. You listen with delight,

By tales of dirt and danger fondly thrilled. (Everyone likes to listen to the war stories, because they are thrilling.)

You crown our distant ardours while we fight,

And mourn our laurelled memories when we're killed. (You’re proud of us when we are fighting, but are upset when we are killed by fighting.)

You can't believe that British troops “retire”

When hell's last horror breaks them, and they run, (You can’t believe that the troops retreat when the worse part of the war comes upon them.)

Trampling the terrible corpses—blind with blood. (They run stepping over bodies because they can not see due to terrible injuries.)

O German mother dreaming by the fire,

While you are knitting socks to send your son

His face is trodden deeper in the mud. (The mother believes her son is coming home and is perfectly healthy, when in reality he is dead.)
