Reading
We continued to improve our comprehension skills by visualizing, or making a picture in our minds, the first day we read the story. Each day after that we have worked on different comprehension skills such as retelling, making connections, and comparing the character from the beginning to the end of the story. We ended the week with our own artwork. We designed the best dot we could make!
Writing
Our narrative story unit is coming along. We introduced the idea of picking a "Snapshot Moment" to write about. Some examples are an experience at recess, losing a tooth, a party, getting mail, or a time at a friend's house. We are encouraging students to think about the details of that one moment. We ask questions such as, who was there; what you ate; what you did; what it was like; and how you felt. Students did a great job illustrating these details. We will expand on these stories as we continue the unit.

Emergency Drills
Lockdown Drill - We will have our first lockdown drill on Thursday, September 19th. For this drill, there will be an announcement to let us know to begin the building lockdown. The procedure is to lock our doors and keep the children out of sight. For us, we will sit in a corner of the room and students will need to stay quiet while we read a story. There will be a police officer in the building to supervise the drill. We will let the students know that we practice in case of a dangerous situation in the building and we need to stay safe in our classroom. We ensure that it is not scary and just another drill to help keep us safe. The drill lasts less than 10 minutes. Please feel free to help prepare your child for this drill.
