Curriculum Corner
This week, we are kicking off our narrative writing unit. Today, students did a narrative pre-assessment. We will spend the rest of this week and next week reading narrative mentor texts and examining the structure of them.
Reading:
The first unit in reading will cover realistic fiction. I will be reading Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt as my mentor text. Students will be expected to have their own reading book within that genre that they will be reading independently, conferring with me, and practicing reading strategies while they read. This week we are focusing on the topics of story arc, character struggle that leads to change, and author's craft - paying close attention to the detail authors add in because none of it is accidental.
Indiana History:
Yesterday, we discussed the U.S. Constitution in preparation for Boone County Judge Kincaid's presentation to the class today. The kids were a great audience! Tomorrow, we will move into our unit on economics.
Science:
We are starting our unit on heredity, animal adaptations, environment, and animal structures. We have been discussing environmental factors and how they affect animal behavior. We will be introducing new critters to our room at the end of the week - isopods (affectionately known as roly-polies). We will be doing some experiments with them to learn about their preferred environments.
Math:
This week, we have been focusing on geometry. We have learned about points, lines, line segments, rays, parallel and perpendicular lines, triangles, and quadrilaterals. We will cover the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles today and tomorrow, then will begin reviewing for our test.
STEPS to SIEW:
This year, student will be participating in a new curriculum called Second Step. At Stonegate, we will be referring to it as "Steps to Strong In Every Way." Every Friday, students will be participating in a lesson focused on social-emotional learning. This week, we will be focusing on understanding complex feelings.
