Skyline K-8

From the Principal
Happy Friday! Next week we have our first IB/Golden Awards Assembly on Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. After the assembly, we will have our first “Pastries with the Principal” event in Mrs. Dunn’s room from 9:20 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Please come say hello to Mrs. Aguirre, learn about IB here at Skyline from Mrs. Dunn and chat with our new school counselor, Miss Allie. Pastries and coffee will be provided. *All parents/guardians are invited to attend this event. Please check in at the main office and get a visitor badge. We look forward to seeing you next Wednesday. Come early, and bring your ID. Your ID must be scanned into our new system upon your first visit to Skyline this year.
Thank you so much to everyone who attended PTA last night. It was awesome to have so many teachers and new parents attend. Following up from the dismissal conversation, K-5 classroom teachers who decide to meet pick-up families during dismissal at a planter box instead of our current location, will be communicating their change with families, the office and the building principal. Thank you Teacher Tom for the great suggestion.
Tuesday's Staff Meeting was hosted in Teacher Tom's Room, beginning with a Teacher Trick shared by Teacher Tom. Thanks, Teacher Tom! Thank you to Morgan Bors for providing us with yummy snacks. We appreciate you!
On Wednesday and Thursday, Kim Sammons and Jet Griffith attended a two day Health Training as our K-5 Health Leads. The two-day institute included training on Teaching skills-based Health Education to elementary students, best practices in Health Education and Oregon Health Education Standards review. It also included planning time and collaboration partnering with community organizations to support health education in schools for elementary students Erin's Law for K-5. We look forward to having them share out what they learned next week during our K-2 and 3-5 PLC’s.
We continued with our PLC’s (Professional Learning Committees) with all of our amazing PLC groups. Specialists worked on aligning their grading practices to ensure that all teachers are on the same page with how to grade their intervention classes as well as their electives/specialists classes. Specialists also looked at their standards of practice and aligned them with the standards that our K-5 teachers have in each of their planners continuing to work on their year long plan.
In our Kindergarten-Second Grade PLC, we continued our work looking at student writing samples, identifying strengths and weaknesses for each student, helping teachers begin to develop instructional plans that will support all students moving forward in their writing this year.
In our Third - Fifth Grade PLC this week, teachers reviewed beginning of the year writing assessments written by their students. We were able to look at the student work, began to score the writing samples and identified areas of focus for classroom instruction.
Dr. Ellwood visited us on Wednesday and Thursday at Skyline K-8 this week, spending time with our 3-5 team during PLC’s and visiting with students during lunch. Thank you to Dr. Ellwood for visiting our school and scoring writing samples with us.
Our Middle School teachers continued their PLC meetings this week by refining the middle school lanyard system. Our middle school team looked at the past practices in our lanyard system and built a system for this year that will support our students as well as our school PBIS program and school wide systems. The middle school teachers are going to roll out the new lanyard system to the students next week..
Skyline K-8 has a team of six staff members; Bianca Arias, Julie Melton, Melissa Dunn, Allie Penix, Melody Hiser and BG Aguirre attending the PPS MTSS Coaching Academy on October 24th and 25th. To learn more about MTSS, please check out the MTSS district website https://www.pps.net/domain/5007.
We would love to continue having volunteers during K-2 lunch/recess from 11:00 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. Miss Debbi has a sign-up sheet in the main office with opportunities through December. Please contact her if you're interested in volunteering. Thank you in advance.
Our PBIS/Climate Committee is looking for two parents to join their team for meetings from 7:45 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. on October 30, December 18, January 29, February 26, April 29 and May 27. If you are interested in being on the committee, please email Miss Allie at apenix@pps.net.
Back-to-School Night is coming up on October 3, 2019. Site Council elections will take place in the library on Back to School Night for our 3rd and 4th parent spot. Please let Melissa Dunn know if you are interested in running for Site Council. Her email is mdunn2@pps.net. Thank you to Sarah Coleman and Shannon Garcia-Shinn for serving on site council. Our first site council meeting is October 16.
If you are not following us on Twitter @BGAGUIRRE1 and @skyline_ib, you are missing out! It has been so much fun watching all of our students engaged in learning while also being safe, respectful, responsible and IB ready.
All the best,
Mrs. Aguirre
