Principal's Message
Happy Holidays, SLEE Families. We loved sharing Breakfast with Santa with you! Thank you for making that day so special. We are excited for the holiday break coming up. The kids and staff have been working hard since the first day of school and have earned this break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the New Year! See you in 2024. We wish you love and peace during this season and in the new year.
- Shout out to our students for working hard, showing kindness, and making the SLEE a great place to work!
- When we return in January, many of our students will be taking the ACCESS test which is a state test that measures English Language Development. It has 4 parts and is administered over a few days. The test measures English Language development in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
All students identified as MultiLingual Learners in the state of Massachusetts take this test. Attendance is very important during our state testing windows. More information will be sent home in the coming weeks.

New Mascot Competition Results
Thank you to all the students that submitted new mascot ideas. We had many great ideas and it was very difficult to narrow it done to the final 5. Students voted and we finally have a winner. Congratulations Room 111 !!

ILP/PA Classroom News
ILP2 and PA2 have been working on learning the difference between a fact and an opinion and working on opinion writing. They have also been working on building social skills by having reciprocal conversations with peers and adults, by initiating conversation and staying on topic. In math, ILP2 has been working on telling time to the half hour and PA2 has been working on lines, segments and rays.
In PA1, the students are working on the informational text “Food Groups”, sorting foods into different categories as well as healthy vs non healthy. They are also learning patterns in math.
In ILP1, the students have finished up their unit on Peter Rabbit. They recently started working on nouns. They have also been working on pre-writing and writing skills by tracing and writing simple sentences. In math they are matching quantities to numbers and counting.
1st Grade News
First Graders are learning...
Skills: We are continuing our learning on nouns. We are working on new vowel sounds such as; “oo”, “ou”, and “oi”. We are reading our new reader “Fables”.
Math: We started adding 3 addends. We are beginning to add numbers within 20 by making a group of ten. Making a ten to add.
Listening and Learning: We are comparing fairy tales while identifying the elements of the story, such as characters, setting, and plot.
SEL: We are continuing our class discussions on growth mindset. As well as being compassionate and what it means to give. Growth mindset

2nd Grade News
Second graders are learning...
Skills: We are working on different spellings for vowel sounds such as long a, o, i, u, e and differentiating between long and short vowels in 2 syllable words. We are currently enjoying reading Kids Excel.
Math: In math we are currently working on adding and subtracting within 200 using different strategies. The kids are working on choosing the best strategy to complete their work.
Knowledge: We are finishing up Greek Myths, and getting ready to move on to United States early history.
SEL: In SEL we are working on having kindness towards others and showing acts of kindness. Here are some read alouds you can enjoy.

3rd Grade News
Third graders are learning...
ELA: We have began our unit on Ancient Rome. We are learning about what life was like in Ancient Rome, famous Romans such as Julius Caesar, and about their gods. In the unit, we are working with both fiction and nonfiction texts to help build our reading skills as well as our comprehension. We are also focusing on opinion writing. We have written an opinion paragraph about who our favorite god or goddess is, and will be writing an opinion essay on Julius Caesar.
Math: We are back to practicing our multiplication and division skills. We continue to learn about the commutative, associative, and distributive properties, as well as practicing solving problems with larger factors or divisors. 3rd grade math is full of math word problems, so we are working on integrating our problem solving skills almost every day!

- We try to go outside for recess as often as possible, so please ensure your 3rd grader has the proper outside clothes like a jacket, hat, and gloves.
- We want to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. Take a few extra minutes and just enjoy the ones you love the most!
4th Grade News
Fourth graders are learning...
ELA: Just started to dive into the poetry unit! Specifically, we are learning about poetic structures which include stanzas, lines, and stanza breaks. We are also working on skills like rhyming, alliteration, and repetition. Please continue to encourage and support independent reading at home!
Math: In our math classes we are continuing working on multiplication through two digit by two digit numbers. In addition, we are mastering up to four by one digit division problems. As always continue on practicing those multiplication and division facts!
4th Grade Reminders
Once again dress appropriately for the weather! Since it is getting colder, jackets, hats, mittens are expected!

5th Grade News
5th graders are learning...
Math: We are learning how dividing whole numbers can result in a fraction or mixed number. We are beginning to understand multiplication of fractions as repeated addition and look at fractions of a set and of a whole.Understanding the connection between fractions and division helps your student with fraction concepts that they learn later.
Science:
ELA: In ELA, we are currently learning about the Aztec, Inca, and Maya civilizations and will be presenting to our classes about one of them after conducting a research project. Our next unit is about poetry.

PACCK- Hello SLEE families! In my class students are learning about the importance of leadership in our community. We are working on how to be a leader both in class and outside of the classroom. Students have been able to practice this character trait by playing games that involve problem solving skills.
Gym- In physical education class we are working on our leadership skills during this rotation. Students will lead though playing Doctor Dodgeball, and Who Let the Dog’s Out.
Art- Hello SLEE families, this month in art we are creating some fun holiday projects while learning about the artist Georgia O’Keefe, along with concepts like perspective and radial symmetry.
Science- Hello families, during this unit some grades are learning about sound as a vibration that travels through different mediums. Others are learning about the properties of sound waves such as amplitude, frequency, pitch, and volume. Others are doing experiments on weathering and erosion and learning about the dangers of erosion and constructing ground covers or fences to stop it. The younger kids are learning about the four seasons and how they are caused by earth’s tilted axis during its orbit through space. Information on an end-of-year science fair will be made available soon. Also, if you gave permission for your child to bring home and care for a class pet during school vacations, three lucky and highly responsible students whose names are drawn can expect to receive a phone call within the next week to see if you’re still interested in caring for an animal. Music- Music class in the month of December is focused on 4 activities:
1) We learn the story of "The Nutcracker" as a tale by E.T. Hoffman and as a ballet by P. Tchaikovsky.
2) We prepare songs for school singalong on Dec. 21.
3) We learn the basics of music theory.
4) We learn about keyboard instruments and how to play piano.

- We are still selling SMENCILS for $1.00 each. Students can purchase in the office during the school day. Be on look out for holiday SMENCILS too.
- We sent out order forms to order school t-shirts and we still have some left. If you still want a shirt please turn in order form to the office (cash only).

- With colder weather setting in, please ensure your student has appropriate clothing for playing outside at recess. We really try to go outside most days unless the weather is really bad to let students get fresh air and run around. Hats and gloves are encouraged as it gets colder!
- Also it is important to remind your child that they can not share food due to allergies. We would really appreciate this!
