What's Under Your Cape?

Superheroes of Curtis Elementary

I was so thrilled when I came across Barbara Gruener's book titled What's Under Your Cape?

I had already decided on a Superhero theme for my classes this year, and this book brought new life and fantastic ideas to my curriculum planning! After reading through and making lesson ideas, I decided on using this book for my 4th grade time. I see students bi weekly in my classroom for "Hero Headquaters" and was thrilled to use each letter of SUPERHEROES to help them work on their character traits for the year!

Lessons

I took each letter from Barbara's book and used her ideas to create lessons for my 4th graders. We took one letter each class period and worked with them for the entire year. Her ideas kept my students engaged and excited about what they would learn next. We kept track of the lessons we had completed on a SUPERHEROES banner in my room. This even made other grade levels take note and want to be a part of those 4th grade lessons.

Service Project!

These students were inspired by S=Service and tied in the Great Kindness Challenge and wrote letters of thanks to our Weatherford City Sanitation Deparment! The City Director came by during class to tell our 4th graders thanks!
Over all, I would say this book was the spark for a lot of great learning this year! The ideas Barbara gave and the lessons taught by using the SUPERHEROES letters proved to be engaging and inspiring for my students! I absolutely love teaching character to my students, and this made it easy for me and thought provoking for my students.

I am more than happy to share the lessons I created using this book! Feel free to contact me!

If you don't have a copy of this book and you are in an elementary school, you should! Super fantastic resource! Thank you Barbara!
