Greyhound Newsletter 9/23/22
Happy Fall!
We are in need of personal hygiene products for our students (all genders). Any new unused products are welcome. Thank you for your support of our students!
Class Meetings Were Held This Week
General Information Presented to Each Grade:
- Attendance Is Critical! Keep an eye on attendance records in Infinite Campus. Be on time and stay in class every day, all day.
- Grades Matter. You have to earn credits to graduate, pass classes to participate in MSHSL athletics and activities, etc. We have help available. Talk to your teachers, your counselors, connect with NHS tutors during WIN soon.
- Yearbook Staff came to talk about Birchlog. Orders go up in price as the year goes on. See the link later in the newsletter to get your order in.
- Meet our SRO, Officer Bill Stauber. He's here to help you stay on track and get back on track if you need support or find yourself in some trouble. His office is in the main office area but he's out and about for you every day.
- Meet the Counselors! They talked about credits, intervention courses, advanced courses, getting social and emotional support, their Drop In Center on the 2nd floor, and other things.
- "Be Where You're Supposed To Be, When You're Supposed To Be There" this motto will prevent most problems in high school. You can make sure you're there for all of the content, connect with teachers if you need help, avoid trouble in the hallways, and lots of other things if you follow this.
- Exec Board student leaders talked about behavior expectations at dances, signing up to share your voice in Student Form, and coming to have fun at Intramural Events through the year.
- Association student leaders came to talk about Homecoming 2022. Theme, dress up days, and events will be announced at lunch next Thursday, September 29th. Homecoming is October 10-14 this year.
- Unified Athletics are growing! Unified Activites connect our students of all ability levels, build relationships, and help all students participate. We have a Unified PE class that has student helpers working with our adaptive phy ed students, a Unified Club called Circle of Friends bringing students together for fun games and activities, and increasing Unified Athletic events like last year's first Unified Track and Field Invitational and tonight's Unified Football game at halftime. Watch for chances to participate and cheer on our students!
Seniors heard about the importance of keeping up on dates and deadlines. Families will get a "Save the Dates" letter early in October to help with this. Counselors are keeping a close eye on progress towards graduation and will be working with any students in danger of not graduating on time. There are lots of opportunities through the year for families to get help or learn more about options for career and education after high school.
Juniors also heard more from the counselors about exploring options for life after high school.
9th and 10th graders reviewed our mandatory bus safety and expectations training.
9th graders learned again about new freedoms in high school coming with new responsibility, too, particularly around cell phone use.
Class Meetings are a great way for us to get information to students in a smaller setting than a full class assembly and for them to have a chance to ask questions of us. We had a great week with our students!
School Climate Survey on Monday, October 3
As an integral part of the school community at Duluth East High School, we want to hear the students’ voice to improve climate and culture. These surveys are anonymous which means students will not be asked their name nor will we know who submitted the survey.
If students do not feel comfortable answering a question they may select “I prefer not to answer.” If you would like your child to opt out of the survey please email jody.geissler@isd709.org or simply have them refrain from taking the survey.
This information is essential feedback to ensure the school climate is safe, supportive, and inclusive for all students.

Harbortown Rotary is Hosting 2 WIN Sessions!
Harbortown Rotary will be hosting two WIN sessions:
Tuesday, Sept. 27 and Wednesday Sept. 28th. FREE donuts and drawing for prizes! Rotary will help build your resume, provide you with service hours and connect you with professionals in the career field you may be interested in learning about. Oh, and we offer a $1,000 scholarship for seniors, so there is that… All grades welcome!
We are also announcing a cash prize Rotary contest!
The contest is open to students who are in their final 2 years of high school. Its purpose is to help educate students on the Rotary 4-Way Test and how they can apply it to their lives. Simply prepare an essay of 500 to 1,000 words in length, and using a topic of the student's choice, incorporate the use of the Rotary 4-Way Test:
Ø IS IT THE TRUTH?
Ø IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED?
Ø WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL AND BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Ø WILL IT BE BENEFICIAL TO ALL CONCERNED?
The District winner of the contest will receive a cash award of $1,250 (includes $150 as Regional Winner). Our club will offer a cash prize to our local winner as well.
Submission deadline is November 30, 2022. Email submission to charity.star007@gmail.com.
Duluth Farm to School Fundraiser: Whole Foods Co-Op Round Up in September!
Great News! - Duluth Farm to School has been selected as Whole Foods Co-Op’s September Round Up at the Register Recipient. The Round Up at the Register Program is part of Whole Foods Co-op’s GIVE program. Shoppers make a difference in their community through small donations at the register by rounding up their purchases. Funds raised through the WF Round Up will be used for school garden repairs, upgrading garden equipment, tastings and overall program sustainability. We appreciate your help by rounding up at the register when shopping at Whole Foods in September.
Duluth Farm to School supports the 9 school gardens in the district along with K-12 cross-curricular based lessons and tastings. Duluth Farm to School is primarily funded via a grant through Essentia Health with fiscal agents being St. Louis County Public Health and Duluth Community School Collaborative.
