BHS Drama's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
On a cold spring night, the BHS Drama production of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, warmed the souls of the audience members in a packed house.
Before the facade of an Athenian palace and in the nearby forest, the twin tales unfolded. With Puck (Alexandria Herring) pulling the strings, the mismatched lovebirds Hermia (Kaitlyn Turner), Helena (Rachel McPeters), Demetrius (Kendall Briggs) and Lysander (Paxton Watkins) sorted out their affairs with the help of some herbal magic.
The cast beautifully captured both the humor and the disconcerting strangeness of the play. There was also a beguiling freshness and urgency about the young lovers. One of the greatest pleasures of the production were the rude mechanicals, the amateur actors doing the play-within-the-play, led by the blustery Nick Bottom (a very funny Lars Hitchcock).
There was emotional depth as well as humor in this production. There were scenes that held the audience's breath, so silent you could hear a pin drop (or a camera shutter...sorry!); and then there were scenes that had the audience roaring with laughter, most notably when Javier Morris as Flute was forced to play the female role of Thisbe.
The entire cast and crew did an exceptional job! Thank you, Mr. Jake Barrow for providing us with a joyous comedy about love and its complications in the mortal and spirit worlds! Bravo!!
