Success in Sixth Grade
Volume 10, Issue 7
A Note from Mr. Nakano
February Precepts:
"All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt." - Charles M. Schulz
"Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
"Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love." - Mother Teresa
Our theme around this month is growth. Celebrating our growth, wherever we are in our learning targets, compared to where we were at the beginning of the year. Celebrating those who made significant growth (some over a grade level growth already!) and celebrating those who recognize what they are still working on and recognizing what needs to be done. We'll continue to celebrate our growth and progress throughout the year as well.
Open House
They will have individual (coding) as well as group (creating their own civilization and mummifying apples) projects that are still "works in progress," but they will be able to share how they got to the point they're at right now.
Two interactive stations will be available, as the students will test whether or not their engineered building can withstand a major earthquake (you can volunteer to be the "shaker") and you can test your "mullet aptitude" by measuring different hair lengths.
There will also be STEM activities in the IRC. The Ozobots, Osmos, and Little Bits are from our classroom, so your child can show you what they've been working on during some of their coding and engineering time.
Food trucks will be in the parking lot from 6-8 along with Astronomy activities in the MPR and on the blacktop from 7-8:30.

Irvine Junior Games
Online registration for the Irvine Junior Games is now live and active at http://www.irvinejuniorgames.org/
- Scroll down and click this purple button below
This is the only way to register - as it ensures all waivers and permission to participate forms are completed.
Registration is due February 16th, but we may fill up this year, like we did last year. Don’t miss out and sign up ASAP!
The Irvine Junior Games is a track and field event in which 4th, 5th, and 6th graders can compete with other Irvine Unified athletes. They may compete in up to four events:
- A distance run (this would be 400 meters for 4th graders and 400 OR 800 meters for 5th and 6th graders)
- A field event (soccer kick (for distance) OR basketball shot OR standing long jump OR bag shot)
- **A sprint run (50 OR 100 meters)
- **Relay race
o ** Runoffs will occur for the sprint and relay teams some time at the end of February. The number of members on each sprint team is determined by the number of team members. More signups means more sprinters allowed on each team so encourage your friends to sign up, too!
All other events are open without a need for a tryout.
- For a little preview of the event, you can view this video: IrvineJuniorGamesVideo
