Cougars ROAR: TEMS Community News

Issue VII: March 31, 2023

Principal's Message

Happy Spring TEMS Families-

This month's newsletter includes important information about end of the year happenings at TEMS, including grade 8 promotion.

The annual school climate survey will be sent to families on April 17th. It is incredibly important for us to have input from all families in order to best meet the needs of our community. Students at TEMS will also be completing these survey this month.

In April TEMS will continue our efforts to promote a positive school culture. Let's show our Cougar Pride and how we R.O.A.R. by wearing purple this month. We are actively planning student assemblies to celebrate kindness and will be sharing more information soon. Click here to see our showcase of kindness with our door decorating.

Have a wonderful month TEMS, and for those who celebrate, Ramadan Mubarak!

Enjoy some highlights from our student celebrations this month:

  • The Timothy Edwards Cheerleaders hosted the first ever regional cheer showcase this month, welcoming teams from Vernon, Manchester, and Ellington to perform routines for spectators. This was followed by our team traveling to East Haven High School for the New England Cheer Association competition. TEMS cheerleaders took 1st place in their middle school division, and 2nd out of middle schools in the entire competition.
  • Our Timothy Edwards Entertainers performed this year’s musical, Matilda, Jr most incredibly. Bravo to the entire cast and crew, and many thanks to the staff and families that supported the many, many hours of preparation for the show.
  • Thirty Timothy Edwards students participated at the Mansfield Regional Contest of Connecticut History Day. All of our student ambassadors represented our school incredibly by demonstrating kindness, sportsmanship, and graciousness. We are proud to share that eleven of our students qualified for the Connecticut History Day State Contest scheduled for May 6th.
  • On March 12th, Timothy Edwards mathematicians participated at the MathCounts statewide competition. The team of Girish Prasad, Ishan Agarawal, Gian Handa and Akhil Shunmugaraga came in 4th place in the state of CT. Girish took 1st place in the live head-to-head competition and came in 4th place overall, qualifying him for the National competition. Girish will be heading to Orlando, FL in May to represent the state of CT where he will compete against the best mathletes in the country.
  • All four TEMS Mock Trial teams qualified for the Connecticut Civics First Playoffs. This was a historic event given that no school in CT has ever had more than 2 teams qualify for the playoffs. TEMS advanced four teams into the eight team playoff quarterfinals tentatively scheduled for April 24th in Middletown.

  • TEMS Science Olympiads competed on Saturday, March 25th. Our middle school scientists took home 16 medals and one of our teams took home a third place trophy.

Parent/ Guardian Event: What Happens when Mean Behavior Occurs?

Please join us on April 4th for the follow up to our family event focused on bullying and social media. In partnership with South Windsor Police Department, South Windsor Youth and Family Services, and the South Windsor Human Relations Commission we are happy to be able to invite Jo Ann Freiburg and Patricia Ciccone back to TEMS to get deeper into our conversation about supporting a positive school climate. Teaching and Learning: News from Our Instructional Coaching Team

Mrs. Alison Fetta and Mr. Kent Besocke are instructional coaches that support faculty and staff in providing instruction that meets the needs of our diverse learners at TEMS.

Throughout life we acquire labels from family and friends. Some labels people are proud of and serve them well while others hinder their educational experience and success in school. Be mindful of the labels placed on your child and look for ways to reframe any ones that might be considered negative to your child.

What truly matters most is how children view themselves, and we can all help build positive self-talk. Click here for a great resource from Big Life Journal that gives examples of how to reframe some common labels.

Tech Tip for Families: News from Our Technology Content Coach

Mrs. Debbie Matchett is our school's Technology Content Coach. She supports educators, students, and families in navigating technological tools that can enrich educational experiences.

South Windsor Public Schools utilizes GoGuardian software to help schools easily manage their student devices, better understand their students, and keep them safer online during the school day.

Parents/Guardians have the ability to download and use the GoGuardian Parent App. This app provides Parents and Guardians with the ability to pause their students' internet, block specific websites, and schedule internet availability outside of the school day on the district managed device.
