Crippen Tech & Media Center Update

November 7, 2014

Scholastic Book Fair

The book fair has been very successful and I want to thank everyone for giving their students the opportunity to come check out the available books. The funds raised from the book fair will go toward updating and adding to our already amazing library.

Please let me know if their are titles or series that you feel our students would like read and are missing from our library. I may be able to get them added with the money raised.

Lastly, I know many of you asked about a teacher discount at the Book Fair. This was not something we had at Valley Ranch, so I did not know it was an option. I will make sure that we have a teacher discount for our April Book Fair.

STar Charts... THANK YOU!!!

Thank you to all staff for quickly completing your STaR Chart. Crippen Elementary was the first campus in the district with 100% teacher completion. You guys ROCK!!!

Spanish Leveled Readers Now Available

A selection of Spanish leveled readers are now available for checkout from the leveled reader library. Please make sure when checking out leveled readers you complete the check out sheet in the yellow notebook and take all rubber banded copies of the reader you are checking out. When you are done with the readers please return them to the return bin and a parent volunteer will shelve them for you.

Discovery Education

I attended an eye opening training session on Discovery Education this week at technology. If you are not familiar with Discovery Education it is an amazing database of videos, clip art, photos, writing prompts, lesson plans, etc. I personally did not know how much has been added to Discover Education, I still thought of it as only streaming videos. I encourage everyone to use this resource as they are planning lessons for their classroom. There is now material for all subject and all grade levels.

For the adventurous you can setup your class and assign them videos to watch and questions to answer. This is a great way to integrate technology and the Chromebooks in your classroom. If you are interested in training on the student and class features now available in Discovery Education, please let me know.

I will be including some of what I learned at my training in our Thursday training sessions throughout the year.

Upcoming Video Conference Opportunities for your students

Meet the nine-banded armadillo and the striped skunk. Although their defense behaviors and adaptations are beneficial to them in their wild environment, these same behaviors do not fare well in urban habitats. Most people cannot help but turn up their noses when they think about these two animals, but after our class, we hope your feelings change. Join us as we clear up some common untruths and add clarity to their unique structures and functions with the help of our friendly guest stars!
