Preparing ELs

When preparing for semester exams, it is important to remember preparation, review, and testing accommodations. In keeping with backwards design, it is also helpful to consider these needs as soon as possible.


Consider allowing time for:

-Reflection (oral, written, drawing, digital)

-Explicit review (including similar style question stems)

-Formative assessments to identify gaps

-Small group instruction to close gaps

-Explicit instruction on study skills

Accommodating the Review

You man consider:

-Provide video clips or reviews

-Provide multiple examples

-Highlight key words/phrases

-Eliminate wordiness

-Provide visuals (hand-drawn, clip art, etc.)

-Provide graphic organizers

-Provide sentence stems/frames

-Provide partially completed reviews

-Provide digital reviews w/ flashcards

-Encourage students to use personal word walls or flashcards (or create them now)

Accommodating the Exam

You may consider:

-Highlight key words/phrases

-Eliminate wordiness

-Provide visuals (hand-drawn, clip art, etc.)

-Allow dictionary/thesaurus

-Provide graphic organizers

-Provide sentence stems/frames

-Allow extra time
